Windows 10 Update More Aggressive Than Ever

Be advised, they changed the Windows 10 update from "Optional" to "Recommended" which means that (depending on your update settings) now there's a one-hour timer displayed, and if you do nothing it will automatically update. So if you're away from your computer (like I was), you'll come back to find that you now run Windows 10. If you want to go back, you'll have to go into "Settings" > "Update & Security" > "Recovery" and select "Go back to Windows #" (# being the version you previously had). Then fill out a form on why you're going back. Then watch it like a hawk, because it will check for updates once you're back in your old version and will automatically start the update timer all over again. Once the timer's there, click on reschedule, and then find the option that says to cancel the update. Then make sure to cancel the Windows 10 download that already started automatically. Note that if it's been more than a month, you can't go back.

I don't have any problems with Windows 10, and soon Windows 7 isn't going to be supported, and probably the same for 8 and 8.1.

Even if there weren't any problems, I would go back just out of principle if that's how they're going to update.

Follow up: After I did the above steps, Windows 10 came back with a vengeance and got rid of the cancel option, so I shut down my computer before the timer ran out (and before the download started) and looked for a solution on my laptop (which is a Mac). I found the GWX control panel (http://blog.ultimateoutsider.com/201...ly-remove.html) which seems to work relatively well so far. I will eventually have to update to Windows 10 (though I'm not happy about it), but I don't intend to until it's required for the things I do. Windows 8 and 8.1 Mainstream Support stops in 2018, and Extended Support stops in 2023, which is sooner than it sounds (remember, we should have already had all our cars be capable of flight by now) but it does give a couple of years where it's not mandatory (regardless of what Microsoft implies).

Yea I followed every precaution to disable the windows 10 update, I no longer get any notifications or threats from Microsoft. I will never update to Windows 10 despite the support drop of Windows 7. I am just waiting for someone to develop a new operating system that supports everything Windows 7 and below does.

Considering that it's 2016 and we're only just now getting Windows 10, I'd wager that by 2023 we'll only be on Windows 17 at the most :)

The most plausible reason they skipped windows 9 is because of the legacy windows 95 and 98. Legacy code would check for "windows 9" or "9x" and this could cause some serious issues for people that are still running legacy software on their shiny new machines. It's either that, or Microsoft's marketing team thought 10 sounded cooler.

I have no faith in Microsoft's marketing though...

I simply have it disabled. My computer doesn't download any updates at all, like ever. I have heard that this is a problem for some though...weird.
