I use AVG and Malwarebytes.
Good common sense (no porn, no sketchy torrents, etc)

And of course the Hardware Firewall in my router (Linksys EA4500) as well as the software firewall that comes with Windows 7
I use avast and malwarebytes, and good common sense.
antivirus is really only useful for more trusted content, if you are downloading risky files, then a virus scanner is not likely to protect you (you will have to be using a virtual machine or extra PC that you do not mind reformatting). Since malware developers have access to the same virus scanners that everyone else has access to, it is not hard for them to develop malware and make sure that none of the current scanners are able to detect it, thus giving their malware some time to infect others before virus scans are updated to detect it.
The first line of defense (and most effective) is safe behavior, the virus and malware protection is then there to hopefully catch anything that makes it past.
And as recommended in the above post, hardware firewalls are also good. a decent hardware firewall (with no upnp) is useful for containing malware. Firewalls running on the system are not useful for containing an infection as once the computer is compromised, the malware often also creates special firewall rules, or simply disables the firewall. A good router based firewall can help prevent an infected machine from becoming part of a bot network sending spam, or hosting CP or other crap that will lead the account holder into troubles with the law.
No hardware firewall ever reduces the need for a software firewall unless you will only have your single PC on the network and never ever, any other system on the network, as if an infected computer is connected to your network, a hardware firewall can protect the world from that machine if it wants to become a spam bot or something, but it will not protect the internal network, so stuff like the windows firewall will offer some protection from other infected devices on the LAN.

Been using it for 4 years now, never has my computer gotten a virus, malware, etc.

Avast is a great free antivirus, and is better than a lot of other ones because it uses little CPU resources. There's even a gaming mode that keeps it quiet and use even less processor whenever an application is fullscreen.
Malwarebytes is very useful after you get a virus.
