It's not just luck. Those bomber pilots have amazing skills too.
THOSE Guys are what separates a "Pilot' from a "Yoke holder'. They not only understand their equipment and it's abilities,but also understand aerodynamics,hydraulics,and a host of other things NOT taught to many pilots today. They also knew how to fly "By the seat of their pants' which to many,means a carefree attitude.It in fact,literally refers to "Feeling' the airframe beneath their ass/pants..the engines rhythm,feel of the air across the vehicle and its control surfaces....My Grandfather flew this way and taught Me how to fly this way. Pretty interesting read
Here's a moving story about the incredible damage one particular B17 sustained and the compassion of a German fighter pilot who escorted them out of German airspace. The two pilots met ~40 years later and became fast friends.
