Default So splurge or not to splurge on sli setup?

Hey guys need a quick advice. I am a student and I am at my final semester of school, I had some money saved up just in case I needed an extra semester etc. etc. but looks like I won't so I am thinking of spending it...idk.

I have decided that I can maybe spend around $1500-$2000ish CDN doller if I do spend and not take a big hit on the bank. So here is the breakdown.

My specs should be on my profile. I already own a ps4, so here are the 3 options:
1). Buy Xbox One and couple of games, save the rest of the money (i.e. probobly looking at the elite bundle and couple of games which should net me a cost of $600ish dollar)

2). Upgrade by gpu and go for a sli setup and buy a second monitor (if possible)

3). Do nothing and keep saving.

If I do go with the gpu route I can maybe send that much. Is that enough for sli gpu and maybe a better monitor?

I only bought a 970 in the first place because it was the best bang for the buck then. I bought my rampage board way later, like around the end of 2015. The work I do was mostly cpu bound.

So as you can see here, during simulation having more powerful cores is pretty useful, and this is running a simple turbulence model .

Anyway right now with 3 120mm noctua fans with the low noise adaptor and a single 140 mm corsiar fan as exhaust using its low noise adapter I get a gpu idle of 29c with a load of 60c in my H440. My cpu with the kraken is set to intake at the top and you can see its load temperature, at idle it can sometimes drop to maybe 20-25c. So what would the limiting factor be for a gpu upgrade if say I am running a 1000w psu as well?

OR I could just say fuck it and save the money, the system is good just that I don't reach nowhere near the 144fps limit of my monitor in ultra. If I do go sli I would maybe consider buying a high res monitor and keeping this asus on as a second monitor.

    Specs: Case: NZXT H440 ] CPU: I7-5960x | CPU Cooler: NZXT Kraken X61 AIO | MOBO: ASUS Rampage V | GPU: Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX 970 | RAM: Gskill Ripjaw 4 16GB 2133Mhz DDR4 kit | PSU: EVGA 1000G2 | SSD (Boot): Samsung 850pro 128GB | HDD (mass storage): WD 1TB Blue 7200RPM | SDD (Working Drve): Samsung 850 evo 500GB | Keyboard: Logitech G510s | Mouse: Logitech G502 Proteus Core | Display: Asus VG248 24in. 144Hz 1ms

I really don't see the need in buying any more computer parts right now. You're are very stacked compared to some. If I were you, I would just save my money. Do whatever you want with it though I'm not here to tell you right from wrong.

Save your money mate. Upgrade when you need too.
For example, I have about £1000 saved away at the moment.
I will probably need to upgrade my computer in about 2 years MAX.
My SPECS are lower than yours by miles and you probably won't need to upgrade for years.

Remember that pascal is (supposedly) dropping this year, so it's best to wait and see how everything is priced post pascal release.

I'd wait for pascal or get a 144hz Gsync Monitor.

Gsync monitor is the best thing that's happened since Nvidia

Hah, I have a Freesync monitor and it truly is a game changer. Games just look buttery smooth with no tearing.

First: PC master race. Don't buy a console. :P

Second: Save your money, don't spend it to spend it! Your rig is more than fine.

Third: If you are looking to upgrade your rig you really don't need more for a second monitor. You definitely don't need to SLI for one.

Your hardware config looks a lot better than most! I'm using an i-5 3570k and think i made a huge mistake upgrading to 2x 980 Ti in SLI from the 970. Spent way too much, and still can't hit above 100 fps on a lot of games with max settings at 1440P

May I ask why you have an i7? An i7 doesn't offer any performance over an i5 of the same edition unless you're doing rendering or multi threaded workload, I'd suggest buying a better GPU (980TI) I7's are a waste of money unless you really need to do rendering or very heavy stuff,

If you're sticking with the GTX 970, no need to go SLI as there won't be much gain. Any card with 4 GB RAM still has limitations that only afford minimal gains for the unnecessary cost.

I would HIGHLY recommend going with a 144Hz monitor at 1440p. I don't think that the G-Sync monitors are worth it for the bump. I am a huge nVIDIA "fanboi" (running a GTX 980 Ti) but have two of the ASUS 144Hz FreeSync monitors. While I don't care about the fact that FreeSync does nothing for me, these panels are IPS vs. TN. The picture is INCREDIBLE. And, they're cheaper than the G-Sync variants. It really doesn't matter much in regards to G-Sync vs. FreeSync right now if your rig can push the FPS to keep up with the refresh rate. Even if you set the monitors at 120Hz, the difference in picture and gaming experience would be huge.

Like some others have also stated...I'm definitely excited about the new Pascal cards :)

If you dont already have 2 monitors buying a 2nd one will change your life. Not even just in gaming but in every computer based thing you do.

I also have to agree that buying a console isnt really worth it unless you have a specific exclusive you really want to play. You should get better performance on any game you could want with your current setup than you will on an xbone in my experience

Hey guys, thanks for replying. My Birthday just passed yesterday didn't spend any money. I heard there is a display port revision on pascal and whatever amd is offering so I will wait. I just wanted to get something as a present. Would a 970 be able to push 144hz at 1440p? I had an i7 because my work as I said was cpu bound running simulations and such. Thanks for the replies guys !!

That would largely depend on what games you are playing. But if you don't mind turning some graphics down then yes you'll be able to push the frames.

Save your money for a rainy day.

SLI really isnt worth it right now, not saying you shouldnt upgrade your gpu (thats up to you).

But you probably wont care that much for the Xbox One it just doesnt have the game like the PC does (master race RIP, not serious jk). However, you could buy an Xbox One controller for giggles (it works great on Fallout 4 and SNES games).

Don't go for SLI/Crossfire. The reason is Pascal and Codename: Arctic Islands will be (hopefully) Single GPU 4k capable. Nvidia's Pascal is getting a pretty sizeable Die Shrink compared to what Maxwell (900 Series) is currently. This means it will run faster, use less power, and is overall more efficient. But it's more costly. Expect the first Pascal GPU's to be $100 more than a GTX 980Ti Hybrid for top of the line.

Ooh well some interesting predicaments did occur.

I got an extra amount of money from my parents which I did to buy an Xbox One Elite with Halo 5 and what ever I had left through in with my always accumulating savings. Seen what is up and up from GTC 2016. I might go SLI if I go with Pascal. I know my dad would want me to build him a rig since I have my RMA'D X99S Sli plus lying around so If I do build him one I will do so when pascal comes out so I can just give him the 970 (not like he games :P)

The elite controller is boss though!! I play some PS2 emulators with xinput for controller emulation and damn so fresh!
