Default New PC Build, Input please

    Hey All,
So I was messing around on PCpartpicker, and I decided to redo my custom plan for a desktop I plan to build this fall. I decided, Hmm, let's ask all the people here what they think and any suggestions they have. So here it is.
    CONSTRAINTS:
1100 or Less price range (Sorry, High School budget)

    Any opinions and suggestions appreciated!

You could proberbly get a better GPU/CPU/Mobo from eBay. As long as you shop right they're normally ok. Would mean for the same price you get far better.

    I would say:

Scrap the optical drive - everything is pretty much universally available digitally these days. Unless there is a specific need for burning DVDs etc I wouldn't have it

A better CPU cooler - The Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO is basically the universal benchmark for great CPU cooling at the best price point available. In some cases it has been proven to be more efficient than some watercooled loops and AIO's etc

Cheaper MOBO is an easy win. Unless you're being specifically picky on a colour theme or for some other specific need, you can get all the same functionality for a fraction of the price of the one you've chosen.

RAM - No need to get 12gb. You can run 99.9% of games perfectly well on 8gb. Anything more, unless you're doing things like video rendering is overkill.

Mass storage - 1tb black series HDD is a fine choice. I would definitely use some of the money saved so far to get a boot SSD (amazing boot times and add your core programmes here for no lag or wait). WELL WORTH IT.

PSU - I would definitely recommend upgrading this. 430W may well be enough to power the build but you'll be potentially pushing its limits. Upgrading to a 500 or 550W would keep you will within any power limits and offer some headroom for future development and expansion.

Ok, so thanks for the ideas so far, I kept an optical drive, but downgraded it as I have some games on disk I still want to run. Nice CPU cooler, but I'm disagreeing with you all on the MoBo. Keeping that. I like it. I guess I lose this argument that I had going with my friend, Boot SSD included, PSU advice taken.
    Thanks so far!
Any other opinions, please let me know.

What games do you plan on playing? Your build looks good. I would suggest a better gpu, Especially since your not going to build this for another couple of months. The bare minimum gpu would be a gtx760. Hopefully by fall the prices will drop and AMD will have released their next generation of GPUs.

He's on the right track; The Coolermaster Hyper 212+ Evo is the best budget CPU Cooler out there and its only $18 more(+ you can replace the stock fan/ use x2 fans in a push-pull if you want to down the road).
    URL: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-099-_-Product

    * About the optical drive: There not expensive, and I still use put them in all my builds; Mainly for OS Installs, MemTest86+, DVD'S/Blu-Ray Discs, ETC. I remember not having one at one point and needing it and being like "damn i really wish i had put an optical drive in this"; But he's right you dont "Need" them, you can burn disc images[.iso] like Windows/Linux and then activate them legally by buying (haha "by buying") the OEM version of it and just using the activation code within it and ignoring the CD.

    Motherboard recommendations:

    * Heres an updated version of the Z97-G45, Its $4 Cheaper and its a recent revision: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813130770
    * I dont think theres anything wrong with the price point of that board; Just be sure to get this updated/revised one linked above ^^^ I included some recommendations just in-case below.

    1) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813157505 - ASRock(ASRock are all ASUS products, their made by ASUS, they're just seperate "Company's" per say) Fatal1ty Z97X Killer $129.99 w/ $20 Mail-in Rebate

    2) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813132415 - ASUS H97-PRO GAMER [The H97 Chipset shouldn't give you any limitations at this price point + this is a great board-well made] $104.99

    3) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128709 - Gigabyte GA-Z97X-Gaming 5 - $129.99

RAM/Memory: Amount is good, like he said 8GB(2x4GB) , But that brand and model, you can get a much higher quality kit from G.Skill for the same price; W/ larger Heatspreaders and higher clock speed; 1866MHz

    1) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231460 - G.Skill Sniper Series 8GB(2x4GB) 1866MHz @ 9CAS - $54

Power supply isn't the best, I mean if your going for semi-modular/modular then yes its probably up there with the best in its price range that are semi-modular/modular ($50-$75).
    * I'd say if you REALLY want semi-modular/modular then thats your best bet; BUT if you can spend $10 more, there are great 80+ GOLD rated PSU's that i'd highly recommend:

    1) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817182321 - Rosewill Photon 550W Fully-modular 80+ GOLD - $ 69.99

    2) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817182331 - Rosewill Valens 600M 600W Semi-modular 80+ GOLD - $69.99

    SSD:

    * You really can go without an SSD for a while; A 120GB SSD runs anywhere from $60-$90, For example the Samsung 850 EVO 120GB is only $70, not that expensive; For now I'd recommend(That's if you aren't really wanting to get an SSD, which there's nothing wrong with that)a Seagate 1TB Hybrid SSHD (1TB HDD + 8GB SSD Cache) alot faster but still very affordable, Ill link the SSHD and a good SSD's below:

    Seagate 1TB SSHD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822178381

    SSD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820226575

    * I'd recommend getting a different case, that case isn't very good for keeping your rig cool, Its very silence optimized, if thats what you want thats fine, its your rig, but if not there are PLENTY of other good cases in that price range that offer better fan-options and filters.

    Hope this helps,

    - Grady :)

OK: So I took some of the advice from the three sources I had, and have changed this: Monitor: Upgraded to 1080p Upgraded PSU, but kept 80+ bronze, (money constraints) Changed Processor, 4440. Downgraded cooler just because I want an upgrade but don't Need a high end one for what I'm doing, (no overclock) Changed MoBo, Think it's good. Changed Case, opinions? Upgraded from WD black to seagate 1TB Hybrid. (I refuse to go Full SSD like my friends want me to.) Any other opinions? Thanks, Rixxan

I can personally tell you that the GTX 960 is good. I recently put together a build pretty similar to yours, about $300 more expensive, and it runs Planetside 2 almost fully maxed without dropping frames too much except in HUGE fights. All you have to do is just wait awhile for the parts to go on sale.

Try the NZXT Source 220; Its got more ventilation, better cable management, and integrated(Not super quality by any means, but its better than none) fan filters

Gonna stick with the current case, the 220's a bit out of my price range. It looks nice, though.

I really think you should still look at another case in your price range; Whats the MAX you can spend on your case?

Well, I'm trying to stay as close to 1k or under as possible for the whole thing, 1020 max for total build i guess.

It looks like your well below 1k (even without Mail-in rebates); That extra $100-$120 (Thats $827.68 - $17.00[Promo]= $810.68 + $4.97 Shipping which is $815.65), which still wouldn't exceed 1k ($50-$75+ below); You can spread that among 1-2 other things like getting a 8gb dual-channel kit (shouldn't add much to the price, maybe $5 to $10MAX) and 1-2 other components (Its up to you what those are, Although I'd reccommend again, getting that +$10 80+ Gold Rosewill fully modular PSU and getting a different case, doesn't have to be the source 220, although i recommend it)

    * THAT MONITOR: Dont get that monitor, you can get higher quality & better value 24" 1080p Monitors within the same Price -range.

I looked in that price range and found a few 24" 1080p Monitors that are of much better quality and value:

    1) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824160240 (AOC 24" 1080p 1ms Response time + Blue Light reduction) [$149.99]

So the two moni's you reccomend wouldn't work, as my GPU's HDMI port is already taken up by the moni that I have currently ( http://www.amazon.com/1908FP-UltraSh.../dp/B002JNR3R4 ) so I'm limited to DisplayPort and DVI-I. Chose different, and changed memory to the sniper series. Did give in on the case, so I see my total as currently 1021.27, hoping it'll go down around the end of july, early aug.

DVI-D and DVI-A are both compatible w/ DVI-I so both those monitors should work; Good pick on the memory, Dual channel will hopefully provide a little more bandwidth + Its the max the LGA1150 SKU's support (Besides Xeons, Im pretty sure)

Build is looking really solid now man; 80+ Gold PSU, I5-4690k, 960, 1TB SSHD, 8GB RAM(Dont worry about the people saying 8GB isn't enough for gaming, I use 8GB of corsair Vengeance LP and i've never ran out of memory); Really solid-

Just make sure to get a DVI-I to DVI-D cable if you do decide to get one of those (or a different one) monitors; forgot to mention that

Does DVI-A need an adapter? or just DVI-D?
