    Default Upgrading PC

My CPU, its cooler, RAM and mobo are all 7 years old now, and since they bottleneck some of the newer games, i think an update is due. I want a quiet gaming system, that will serve me for years to come, just like my old has. Budget is around 650€ (comparable to dollars where i live), willing to spend more or less, if anyone has a convincing suggestion to do so. I'm especially curiouus if 4 cores will be enough for future games. New monitor is 1440p @ 60hz, headphones are HD 558 50 Ω. Colour theme is black with possible yellow or dirty colour highlights (think Noctua fans :))

Current specs, red marks parts that i mean to replace.

    Case: Define R5
    PSU: Corsair RM850
GPU: 7970 3GB Sapphire with 2 140mm Noctua fans (plan to buy the next generation 400€ GeForce when it comes out)
    SSD: Intel 250GB
    HDD: WD Green 3TB
    CPU: Intel Core2 Quad Q9550
    Cooler: 90mm Zalman
    Mobo: Asus P5Q
    RAM: 8GB DDR2 800Mhz

    What i would buy:
    CPU: Intel i5 6600K
    Cooler: NOCTUA NH-D15
    Mobo: ASROCK Z170 Extreme4 DDR4
    RAM: CORSAIR Vengeance LPX 16GB

Any comments on suggested setup are appreciated.

It seems to me that next gen games are utilizing multi processing - at least BF4 does. You might want to check out intel i7 4000 or 5000 series as they introduce a technology called hyper-threading (i5 and lower don't have this). What this does is increases the processor's capacity at multi-processing. An i7 cpu with 4 cores would be more like having a cpu with 8 cores because of hyper-threading. I'd just say do some research on the games you play the most and see if they perform better with more cores. If not, just get the i5 and spend more money on a graphics card. You also will most likely be forced to buy ddr3 ram as well, as ddr2 is likely not compatible with newer motherboards.

I have an i7-4790k paired with GTX 980's in SLI.

    The processor is VERY smooth.

I'd go for 4 cores with a higher clock over a six core upgrade, at least, for the foreseeable future.

A 970 or 980 will keep you handy for several years to come.
I'm pleasantly surprised at the temps obtained on the i7 with a nice watercooling setup.

I would really encourage you to consider an i7. If it was 2 years ago, I'd be all aboard on the i5 over an i7, but with the way we're starting to utilize the cores with gaming, the 8 core's off an i7 4xxxx series is a solid investment.

I second the 4790k with water cooling. Mine works beautifully. And the water cooling will help with any RAM clearance issues.

The 7970 is still viable in today's market and is slightly under a 380x in performance. I'd wait for cards with full DirectX 12 support to come out until you upgrade.

Thanks for all the replies, i haven't upgraded yet. I did some more research and now i'll actually upgrade to win10 first, then maybe wait another year depending on how games will run.

New question: would i get better performance if i upgraded the CPU even in games that are not CPU bound (because of the draw calls and stuff)?

it never hurts to upgrade (usually) personally when I upgrade I look at something that will last a while and has good overclocking potential

i7 5820k is a delicious processor. You likely wont need an upgrade from a 5820k for a good 3 years as its a 6 core, runs on skylake which is a beautiful architecture, and has insane OC potential because of the low thermal output. You can be a crazy mofo too and stream, render, edit high res, etc. This CPU is the cats pajamas.

it's younger brother (I7-4790k) isn't half bad either...I'm going to try and push for a 5gHz OC
