    Default Cheap overclocking setup

Hey guys, I'm looking forward to do an overclocking demonstration; but the problem is that I'm quite a rookie in this OC business, so I don't want of course to risk my current rig, so I was wondering if there's a cheap PC setup that can be overclocked.

I have a spare Gigabyte Z87 motherboard (I don't remember the model, but is not a gaming or overclocking MB) and possibly can buy some liquid nitrogen, also I have access to some laboratory electrical material such as power supples, multimeters Etc.

Also, I have like two or three months to work on this, so I can get to learn a thing or two about OC.

    Thanks

To what end? You can overclock with liquid nitrogen, but it's extremely unsafe and only lasts for a short time.

Do you want to keep this computer around? Or is it just an experimental rig that won't be used for anything afterwards?

Do you want to overclock the hard way? Or can it be mostly automated?

It would depend on the price; I mean if the setup is really cheap and crappy, I'd just use it as an experimental rig, if I can OC in an automated way that'd be great but I'm open to try the hard way.

There are a lot of resources online. Guides and all that stuff. I used ASUS AI Suite 3 to overclock my rig. It came with my ASUS Z97-A mobo, and it's essentially entirely automated. It overclocks your CPU, tests it, then ups the clock again until it fails. Then it lowers it by a step. It also overclocks your RAM if it's capable. It might not be able to get as high of an overclock as tweaking voltages manually, but it's a whole lot faster and easier.

Sounds like some fun, I would start with the design of the heat sink combo vessel...just fill as nitrogen evaporates. You would want the motherboard flat and no case, umm DUH. I don't know of any way around just buy the parts you don't have spare. It is a demonstration so you Frankenstein the thing.

sorry but I don't know the motherboards and CPU best for this demonstration. I was thinking you needed help in the display of your demonstration not help in the components price search. I get off track.........yeah.

Heh, something just sounds inherently wrong using the terms "cheap" and "overclocking" in the same discussion ;)

Yea, but you can't game on that. It doesn't have a good GPU. And I wouldn't OC on that PSU.

He never said he needed it for gaming, just a demonstration. It has onboard graphics so it doesn't need a GPU. Without a GPU, that power supply will be more than adequate.

Personally I'd go with at least a minimum of a 80+ gold certification, but that's just me. I prefer my PSU to have a Platinum rating though.

Platnium is a bit overkill. Just go by the Tom's Hardware Tier List. Tier 1 PSU's are perfectly fine.

If you want something cheap for a demonstration look on Craigslist / anywhere else online for a used computer with a cpu that's overclockable (all AMD FX cpus and Intel cpus ending with a -K).

I'm not sure if you can overclock that Intel Gxxx cpu that was posted but might be wrong. I was under the impression Intel locks down their lower-end cpus so you have to buy K chips if you want to have fun.

No, the Pentium G3258 is completely overclockable, hell if you give it some good Watercooling, you can clock it higher than a 4790k. It just has 2 Physical Cores, and no Hyperthreading, so it's a gimped i3.

You want cheap overclocking, ebay and 775 socket cpus.

On air and water you'll hit thermal limits. On LN2 you'll hit voltage and clock limits.

You also get to mess with proper overclocking. FSB, BLK SB overclocking. Just get good quality RAM.

Yeah, basically the setup needs to be "cheap" because I'm aware it might die while doing the OC; specially if I'm going to do it with liquid nitrogen.

But a few days ago they told me I could do the OC and demonstrate how it changes performance while the OC increases, without doing a risky OC with L. nitrogen, high voltages and stuff.

In that case I can use a spare GTX 760 and spend a bit more in the setup and using 3DMark to track performance.
