For the demanding games maxed out (i have BF4/Overwatch) I was getting solid frames but when a lot was going on I would dip below 60 in battlefield sometimes but the G-Sync feature helped the lag a bit. With the 970 I really had no issues constantly with the dipping but with my 1080 I get 110-144 (usually on the higher end) fps and 130-144 fps (limited) in overwatch.
So yes at my monitor which is a 27 inch 1440p panel the 970 would probably do nicely with a few settings turned down. More demanding games you might not get away with as easily. For the size monitor you are looking at, while still a 1440p it has a lot more pixels to render on the width so you may need a little more horsepower to run it depending on how high you like to crank the settings (would be a shame not to on such a nice panel).
GPU upgrade might have to come with it depending on your settings.
Just my two cents based off my experience.
