GTX Titan P in August

It will be interesting to see if the rumors check out and hold up. Definitely a big shift from their usual rollout strategy in releasing the Titan model this close to initial launch...

Rumored to have either 12 GB or 16 GB of HBM2. Some are reporting two versions of the card, but that one I find extremely hard to believe (as it technically defeats the entire purpose of what the Titan variant is meant to be - the absolute highest-end consumer card short of going with a Quadro). I would think the Titan P would be more along the lines of 24 GB or even 32 GB, which is what HBM2 and Pascal currently cap out at. It would then make more sense if the GTX 1080 Ti was either 12 GB or 16 GB of HBM2.

Traditionally it's been the following year at GTC but I kinda' wonder if AMDs plan to announce Vega later this year has any bearing on the decision to go ahead and launch it.

My hope is that if this does hold up, and they do actually launch the Titan P next month, it also means that they'll move up the announcement / launch of the 1080 Ti.

Just in time for Christmas, perhaps? :)

Looks like one thing is for certain, though...if the reason does turn out to be related to anything from AMD, perhaps the old-skool "GPU Wars" are indeed back.

Heh, based on the earlier Titans, no one should buy this, at least not for over 1,000 dollars. Just wait for the 1080 Ti or a 1180 (or so).

The "Titan" variants have always been strictly a niche play and more of a show of strength on nVIDIA's part to showcase what their current chipset line is capable of. Regardless of it being complete overkill for 99.999% of anyone that would have a need for it, there's always going to be a very similar, target audience that buy it. nVIDIA knows that, too, and I'm willing to bet that they probably don't even ever factor in sales from the "Titan" line as an important bottom-line, P&L item. I mean, hell, I worked for one of the large tire manufacturers (based out of Italy if that is enough of a hint) and they manufactured a 26" SUV tire back in 2004 or so. At the time, it was the first of its kind and went for about $1,000 per tire. But, the target market for it paid for it, so there's always someone that's going to be in that target market, as crazy or stupid as other may think it to be.

I think the other viable use-case would be someone that may also do a good bit of high-end video editing and such, along with gaming, but isn't going to be up to drop $4,000+ on the Quadro line.

Just really hope we DO see the 1080 Ti sooner than expected :)
