    Default Android Emulators ?

    Anyone use any android emulators?

I just started looking into them and found this link - Best 8 Emulators.

I am not looking to game or anything on it, I just want something for the Steam Mobile Authenticator and that is it; I also want a free one as well.

Based off of what I heard and the link's list, I am thinking either Leapdroid or Bluestacks.

I simply connect my ASUS Zenfone 2 through PC-Link and control my phone with mouse and keyboard. You can also set full screen if you like

I went with bluestacks, but steam isn't taking VOIP numbers.

I did a search and found some youtube vids of how to get the steam mobile auth without a real phone.
They suggested using receive-a-sms.com or textnow.com.
Textnow assigns each account a phone number, but I saw some youtube replies who said if you don't send out messages often, they may take your number away, and the sms.com seems like it changes it's numbers often itself.
Either way, I did try to use numbers from both, both came up as steam wont use VOIP numbers.

Just wondering if anyone knows of another method, without a real phone of course, for getting steam mobile authenticator to work on a PC?

For what its worth, winauth can run the steam authenticator for you. It can also do the battle.net authentication and pretty much any TOTP authenticator that you can run out of the Google Authenticator app. I use it myself for Steam and Battle.net while being able to have the phone apps as well.

BTW, unless you have root access to your phone or know how to run and inspect backups through ADB, you need to regenerate the Steam authenticator.

Well I don't have a smart phone, which should be the major point of doing this, and I have never heard of ADB, or done anything with backups at all; so what do you suggest?

If you've never used the android or IOS app, you can just use winauth to generate the authenticator.

Download the app. It run locally and doesn't modify the windows registry. It's pretty easy to figure out.

Android x-86 got a nice update so you should be able to create a bootable USB or run it under VMWare etc.

If you're looking for a more general 2FA solution, get a Yubikey. Supported by a lot of major services Google, LastPass etc and they work great. Have a Neo and a 4Nano. If you are a Github user, you can also get a discount on your first purchase. They also offer discounts for LastPass customers as well. While it does not support Steam authentication, you can add a variety of services under the key to generate 6+ digit codes to authenticate you.

Ok, I don't think anyone is getting what I want who replies here...

I want to have something to run the Steam Mobile Authenticator on, which I found out was likely an Android Emulator or the like, (that is free as well) without a real SMS/smart phone or number.

I've had no trouble running the Steam Mobile Authenticator, but it will not work without a SMS phone number.

The "how to" vids for doing this without a real phone/number suggested using receive-a-sms.com or textnow.com (links above in one of my earlier posts); but steam is no longer allowing VOIP numbers to work.

So I am not needing anything else on emulators, I need a new method of doing SMS that isn't the two links from above that works with steam.

Or more basic, if you are running a emulator on your PC, and have Steam Mobile Authenticator running and also working with the codes (as in you can still have the authenticator running without codes working, more or less just being able to use friends list and check/edit some steam settings, which is all I could do before since steam won't take the VOIP numbers anymore), but also do not have a real smart/SMS phone or number; how do you do it?

You shouldn't require a phone number to use the Steam Authenticator. I just set it up on my Nexus 9 (tablet) without having a text message sent.

In any case, the only thing I can imagine will work is Google Voice. You still need a backup number to sign up for it but it does send/receive sms/mms and calls for free through North America. I managed to make an account using a VOIP provider as it's unavailable to Canadians but you should be able to sign up and get a number to use.

Also, if you are looking for an open-source alternative, this may be for you https://github.com/Jessecar96/SteamDesktopAuthenticator.

Haven't used it but the setup instructions look fairly straight forward. Not sure why you're not using the email only authentication. Having an authenticator generate codes on the desktop is kind of pointless if you are not constantly logging into other devices. If your desktop is compromised and data is revealed, the authenticator is likely compromised as well in that case. The entire premise behind mobile authentication is to have something physically separated generate an authentication code or token.

The e-mail authentication by default only asks you to enter codes when you are connecting from a non-authorized device or browser. Combining that with strong passwords for both Steam and your e-mail account and you're pretty much safe in 99% of situations.

    Well the thing is-
    1) Steam is screwing everyone who doesn't use the mobile authenticator with a 15 day trade/sell block if you don't have it...
    2) Quite frankly, having something on your phone or other mobile device seems less secure if you ask me.... such as what's more likely to be stolen, someone's PC (even a laptop) or their phone or tablet? Not to mention you can't really lose your PC (cept maybe a laptop...) but people lose phones all the time. And if you lose your phone/table that has the mobile authenticator on it, you can't log in to steam till you get it removed or changed to new device (which I hear can take a bit of time)

This extra bit of "security" doesn't seem worth it to me. But people have to wait 15 days for a trade to go through or 15 days for a item they wanna sell on the market to even be listed if they don't use this retarded method.

Ditto here as well, cause you DO NEED a SMS phone number on your account to use the authenticator FULLY. Just tried google voice, steam says it's also VOIP number and steam is not using VOIP numbers anymore.

That steam desktop authenticator is in the same boat as a normal one, still needs a SMS phone number that's not VOIP.

So it seems me trying to clarify what I wanted didn't help any... since I said I needed help on the SMS number front... not the something to run the authenticator on/with.

I typed out a really long reply stating why this is a bad idea from a security viewpoint but to cut a long explanation short, you can't.

Running the authenticator on your PC is not a bad idea on a security viewpoint.... running it on something more likely to be physically stolen, or just plain lost, is the bad idea.

In case of hacking, the hacker will have to get BOTH the authenticator and your steam account (and probably your email as well) to do anything.

And if you haven't figured it out, I am not doing this for any extra security, I am doing it so I am not blocked from selling or trading for 15 days.

Whoever came up with that 15 day wait idea should be killed.

You can use a trusted friend/family member's phone to enable the authenticator once. The codes are generated locally and not sent via sms so it's just a one time setup unless for some reason you have to validate again via SMS.

I've also heard of some home phone providers accepting text messages on landlines and sending it to the customer as a voicemail. You may get charged extra for it but it is worth a shot.

Other than that I don't think you have many options as they have already flagged numbers from various VOIP providers.

Lastly, hardware solutions even with the common problems of being lost/stolen are still much more safer as the key does not hold any account data and simply generates codes or authentication tokens. AFAIK no one has been able to hijack/steal authentication tokens or keys to generate the authentication codes and also the firmware is read-only ensuring that no one can manipulate it either, not even the manufacturer. Lost or stolen hardware keys can be removed from your account in minutes rendering them useless to anyone who has it as well.

Compared to a storing on a PC, if anyone gains remote access, they can easily monitor keystrokes to obtain your password and with the authenticator running on the desktop itself, also have access to the data that generates the second step code to have account access. With an authenticator running on a physically separate device, they would likely not have access to the authentication codes from your cellphone or tablet and not be able to log into your account.

As for the trading system, I can see why they are trying to force people to use authenticators however the time limit extension is simply silly. Shortening it to a couple days makes more sense.

You can techno-babble all you want, the authenticators will eventually get hacked no matter what device they're run on, that's only a matter of time.

But if you keep your own PC safely running, running the authenticator there is more sound then on a portable device.
