Aircraft Identification Thread
Hi Guys,
This is something that I have seen and participated in on other aviation related forums. I find this extremely fun because it means I am always learning about new aircraft.
So I will see if there are enough people in AOD interested in this to keep this thread going.
The Rules :
No google image search - This is why my images posted will have alterations made to them to prevent them from being picked up. But you don't have to do that - This is AOD and we will trust that people do not google image search.
If you answer correctly, wait for confirmation OR link a Wikipedia link to that aircraft.
All aircraft/ helicopters that we do, should have a Wikipedia article WITH an image.
If the person who got it correct fails to upload an image in 24 hours - Open house is declared - The first person to upload an image is then in control.
If the image is too hard - after 3 days - The same uploader is then able to upload an image - On the 4th day Open house is declared.
Make the image large enough (800px on the biggest side is perfect).
Hints are encouraged but don't make it too hard or too easy of a hint. Our goal is for everyone to learn a new aircraft (ideally 1 to 2 a day).
So here is an example of how it would work.
User 1 uploads this image.
I will look at it and try to see features of the aircraft that I can make out.
First the basics :
Tail Dragger,
Military,
4 to 6 seater aircraft.
Airforce emblem on the side - Can I make it out - yes - its the SAAF emblem.
So I will google down those lines
The SAAF had 3 taildragger aircraft that would match this description in use recently :
The Cessna 185
The Aermacchi AM.3 Bosbok
and the Atlas C4M Kudu
I see a picture of the Atlas C4M Kudu and then go onto its Wikipedia page :
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aermacchi_AL-60
It is under the Aermacchi AL-60 page because it was an aircraft that was built under license by Atlas in South Africa based on the Aermacchi AL-60.
I then upload an image -
Alright guys, So that's how it works and here is the first image. I really hope there are people in AOD as passionate about aircraft as I am.
Regards

So here is the first plane/ helicopter :
What is it ;)
A personal favorite of mine.
Hint : It is being used to great effect in the D.R.C. as part of the U.N. peacekeeping forces there.

No man, no problem
Of course, it had to be South African. the Denel Rooivalk. Well done with the game idea though, it sounds fun and you don't need to have lots of experience with these vehicles to play. Also looking at the features of the aircraft helps a lot.
Here is wikipedia link.

You are indeed correct my good sir!
UAREBBQ you have control.

No man, no problem
I recently read about this aircraft and it was quite interesting, anyway time for the hint.
It was used in Katanga/Congo civil war and the Six Day War in Israel.

Fouga CM.170 Magister - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fouga_CM.170_Magister
Although I have no idea what colours that one is in.
Privately owned maybe?
If you have the money and want 20 of the buggers :
http://www.raptoraviation.com/aircra...uga%20IAI.html
Or just one for $29900
http://www.planecheck.com/index.asp?...0Z%E9phyr&id=0
But the costs in fuel burn would be insane as its got two engines.
Okay now an easy one before I go to bed
My dads old aircraft.

haha, yeah, buying and keeping it is expensive, and this is excluding the pilot's license. This plane is from a Dutch aircraft museum, and I think its custom painted or maybe Dutch colours(I don't think so). I won the last one and to give someone else a chance I won't guess this one. Otherwise it would be just me and Argo playing xD.

Of course I talk to myself. Sometimes I need expert advice.
That looks like a Diamond HK36 Super Dimona https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diamond_HK36_Super_Dimona
I'm not 100% sure but it's definitely a Diamond aircraft.

Sorry Fella it is not a Diamond Hk36 but there is a link to the actual plane on that Wiki page you linked =)

Ahh, then my next best guess would be the Grob G 109B Vigilant T1. If it's not then I give up. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grob_G_109

You are correct my good sir!
You are now P.I.C. (Pilot in control)
My dad owned that aircraft for about 20 years
Flew to Zimbabwe (Then Rhodesia) a few times, Botswana and even did a loop over Victoria Falls Bridge.
Flew it around South Africa and logged nearly over 1K Flight hours which (for a private pilot) isn't that bad.
And he proposed to my mother flying over the Drakensberg mountains with the engine off (Its a motor glider, which means you can turn it off and it glides really well and then turn the engine back on and repeat the whole process) and at the top of a loop (They were inverted at the time).
The Sh!t head sold it before I got to the age of 10 but I still remember some of the flights in it.
In actual fact that aircraft (ZS-LPN Grob 109B) is probably the reason I am into aviation and the reason I met all of you guys =P

I was too lazy to go to the flight line to get a picture, so I just googled a picture of the plane.

For Sale: Parachute. Only used once, never opened, small stain
I'll try my luck with:
Diamond DA-42
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diamond_DA42
EDIT: Lol, few minutes too late :P

I'm at Embry-Riddle, and I think we have at least 35 DA42s on our flight line. But yeah DA42.

I was going to let someone else post but at the same time I don't want to loose this thread. That is a Yak 11 and the same plane in your picture is the same plane at the top of the Wikipedia page.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yakovlev_Yak-11#
Might I suggest that we open this thread up to tanks as well so non-aircraft enthusiasts can get involved too?
I'll post a new picture when I can. I'm in my math class right now and can't really take out my laptop to post a new one

HINT: Very long range experimental aircraft.

Seeing as there has been no response by anyone :
Fella it is a Tachikawa Ki-77
Actually a fascinating aircraft that I had not known before - Took me a bit of researching but the Japanese insignia, the hint about it being long range and its profile made it relatively easy to find - Great job - This is the perfect aircraft to link as its easy for people to find and actually a really fascinating plane.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tachikawa_Ki-77
It is amazing how much smaller it is than the P2V-1 Neptune which broke the Ki77's unofficial record 2 years later. For a plane that size to fly 18 000 km - dayum.
Here is the next one guys :
I will accept the South African or the Italian/ Australian name for it <-- Hint is in here
