Yay, I get to spend today troubleshooting!

But seriously my computer did some updates today and decided to do the black screen of death. It's 8.1, it has a mobile cursor, task manager and Ctrl alt Del work, programs will not start, and the task bar is visible with only the windows logo. The only accessible thing outside of Ctrl alt Del is the right click menu for the task bar. I cannot force programs to run via task manager but I can stop them. There are no suspicious programs in task manager and I can access safe mode.

What I would do since you have access to safe mode is a system restore to the nearest date before the windows update. That will most likely fix the issues.

Just tried that. Windows claimed something was corrupted on the hard drive. After fixing that system restore no longer has any restore points.

Other failed fixes include updating drivers, forcing windows to use clean drivers, explorer.exe, and checking the shell registry entry.

I'm getting closer and closer to system refresh, system reset, or a whole re-install.

Yeah, sounds like something got HORRIBLY corrupt during the updates. Even if you did find a solution theres a HUGE chance something else will go wrong. In my honest opinion I would do a file backup and just re install windows. Pain in the ass, but a guarantee fix.

Lol now it's stuck in a safe mode loop.

LOL! Yeah, I would definitely just re-install the OS.

    I got it!

Somewhere along the line Task Manager was able to force things to run again so I properly re-installed my display drivers. It was intel's display driver screwing everything up.

Intel had a screwed up driver for my gigabyte motherboard not too long ago that wouldn't put audio over HDMI. They're slipping.
