Well, DNS is the thing that translatesa URL like http://clanaod.net to an IP number (like 192.168.0.1).
So, if you know the IP of the computer you want to connect to, it works without DNS, if you want to browse the web, you'll probably need DNS.

The problem was probably a manually inserted DNS Server IP address in your network configuration (at least that would be my first guess)

A lot of viruses\spyware\malware will insert DNS entries to the net config, and/or set proxy settings, and/or change the host file.

Any one of which could have caused the behavior you describe.

Hey, I have had this problem before too.

    try this.

    start>run> type cmd> type ipconfig/flushdns or ipconfig/dnsflush

also, you can set your dns to google! I use googles dns and it works very well!

There are also programs out there that will add a static DNS into you config file. You can always remove it manually if necessary.

    path is c:/windows/system32/drivers/etc

Open the hosts file using a notepad. Make sure there are no listings with a# sign in front. If there are, delete them.

A lot of times, this will take care of things.
