the fact that your first two steps had missed a packet would be worrisome to me.
Step 1 is your comcast modem,
step 2 is node servicing your area.

The fact your missing packets before you even leave the building or make it a few blocks away from you is a bit worrisome.

Keep doing these and when you get one that shows a real issue instead of just the potential issue the above shows. and you'll have some solid evidence to give comcast.

honestly looks to me like you could have a modem issue. but need tests when the issue is actively happening (or starting to happen) to better determine where the fault lies.

Also before you post anymore, please clean them up a little so it looks like this (this is your example from above) just takes a few back spaces so that it is easily legible.

The fact that on stop 0 (your pc) you lost 59% of the packets sent to yourself is disconcerting and if this was the only machine in the house experiencing this I would say the network port on your PC is faulty or you have malware\spyware installed

However since this is across all machines in the house, I would lean to your household being infected with spyware/maleware, the comcast modem needs to be replaced, or the firewall software you are using. In that order.

The fact it happens intermittently makes me think it is spyware\maleware and the issue happens when that is phoning home to upload whatever it has captured on your machine and/or when your computer is being used as part of a botnet the malware has brought you in to.

There is also a low chance that this is caused my interference in your power grid\house power. I've seen cases where houses weren't properly grounded and/or were receiving very dirty power from grid. And the network equipment was just on the other side of the wall from one of the main fuse panels and\or junction boxes and\or faulty conduit (or plugged directly into wall receiving said dirty power instead of being behind a UPS unit). The EM interference from that alone (even with shielded net cable) was causing the issue. However this I consider to be the least likely of the possible causes. Or if not behind a UPS and receiving dirty power can cause it. It's the hail mary though usually. Except you said your in a rural area, which increases the chances if your grid power being very dirty since rural companies tend not to have the money to upgrade\replace faulty\old equipment as fast they should (bad lines, bad transformers, bad sub stations, or at the power plant itself).

Personally I would start by getting comcast to replace the modem an check the line coming in to your house. My dad had a similar issue once, turned out that squirel had eate thru insulation on cable wire coming in to the house. so anytime it rained or got super humid. it would short out the wire and he would lose network very similarly to how you are. And again, being rural increasing the chance of critter attack on the line.

yes I am rural, and there are plenty of squirrels around here! I am running a virus scan on my computer atm, using windows defender, then will try malwarebytes, this is across all computers and devices in the house, so I know its not just mine (computers, phones, laptops, tablets, TV)

OK, a few questions, so you think its our motem, not our wireless router? and it is malware or a virus? and How does that occur?

I'm leaning towards the modem over the router; because you mentioned the issue occurred even when you were directly plugged in to the cable modem taking the router out of the equation.

Electronics die, just like everything. While commercial modems tend to last 5 years on average (they actually usually live longer, but within 5 years usually the carrier will have changed something that makes your modem obsolete\slow even if it still functions), doesn't mean they all do. Shit happens. You could have gotten that one bad egg, or had a power surge, or to much dust, or a hundred other possibility to cause the modem to go bad well before their expected EOL.

And if your only source of protection is windows defender and malwarebytes. Then your asking to be infected. windows defender is a joke. and malwarebytes isn't pro-active it is for removing things post infection (it is very good at removing the infection, but doesn't stop you from getting infected in the first place).

You should look in to getting a proactive firewall\antivrus\anti-malware. Personally I say do research on this, there are many great options free and pay for. To many for me to make a suggestion. And in many ways it comes down to personal preference, as what is the "best" today, could easily be trumped by the competition tomorrow in the case of digital security.

Then being rural I would certainly look in to checking the lines as I know more than one case of critters (particularly squirrels as in my Fathers case) eating insulation off wires and causing shorts in the exposed wire(s) during high humidity\active rain. Which leads to corrosion\rust which then leads to the issue during dryer times as well as wet (worse when wet).

The problem with your issue is there is sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo many potential causes of intermittent down time, it is very hard to give you a straight answer.

    .
Windows Defender has been End of Life for several years now and isn't even supported/updated any longer. I would STRONGLY recommend Microsoft Security Essentials

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/w...tials-download

in its place-also free. Additionally Malwarebytes does have a PAID version which covers 3 PCs ($25 USD/year) and does have proactive protection-I also personally use and recommend this.

To ensure you don't have any rootkits or hard to kill viruses also grab Kaspersky's TDSSKiller
    http://support.kaspersky.com/viruses...?qid=208280684

And finally to ensure that you have any out of date software holes plugged grab Secunia's Personal Software Inspector
    http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/

If you need help removing a serious viral infection (or any other support issues) feel free to check out:
    http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=wowtech

I and many other tech support folks hang out there and are happy to help with tech issues minor or major.
