Default AMD 8320 Bulldozer + Asus M5A97 LE R2.0 overclocked

Finally got my Cooler Master hyper 212 evo cooler so started the oc today,

After 5 crashes i finally found a stable build that i'm happy with

    Now running 4.4GHz at 1.45v

Temp sitting around 38 degrees idol/54 degrees gaming

Used AIDA 64/Prime 95 to test

54 is kinda high considering the cooler that you have. What processor do you got?

AMD 8320 fx bulldozer (8 core). Its not stable, just had a right nightmare! PC crashed and on reboot was not detecting my keyboard until after bios prompt, then crashed again. this repeated for about 15mins until one time it just picked up my keyboard in time. Reverted back to (hopefully safe) 4.2GHz for the time being.

As for the temps, i have 3 different software kits to moniter temps, AIDA64/speedfan MSI afterburner and all of them are different. That reading was the highest on AIDA64. My man cave is small and hot which won't help.

After research i found that 70+ degrees is bad so 54 is fine?

Try upping the voltage slightly as long as you stay under 60C everything should be fine. That cooler should be able to handle some more. Are you using a high quality thermal paste. I like the antec formula 7 and it can be found at your local staples store. I also have an 8320 and was able to hit 4.8Ghz using 1.475V using the multiplier only. Maybe up your dram voltage and cpu-nb voltage slightly to see if things become stable.

Its wasn't as stable as i thought, crashed yesterday so i reverted back to stock till i can do more research.

It wouldn't boot to windows (just black screened) and on the asus splash screen i couldn't press f2/del because it wasn't detecting my keyboard until right at the end and it was too late.....then crash. After 20min i finally got it.

Using cooler master E2 paste, i read that paste can only drop your temps by 3-4 degrees max? I binned the stocl one that came with the cooler and got some better paste that was to hand.

The temps were not really a concern as i was increasing clock, i found 2-3 degrees per .2GHz rise so the fan was doing fine.

What are safe levels for dram volts? cpu-nb voltage? should i just push them up one at a time or should they balance?

    Thanks for your help guys

Your CPU is just fine, i think your board is messing up with this a bit

    Ok so new OC 4.2Ghz @ 1.43v

    Core idol : 32 deg
    Core load: 38 deg

    CPU idol: 43 deg
CPU load: 58 deg (max temp for this chip 70 deg, so well in the bracket)

So far, stable AIDA64 run stress for 1 hour, no problems

Are you using the fsb or the multiplier to oc? You should be using the multiplier to find your max oc. The fsb is used to fine tune everything else which involves changing voltages and timings of other areas. From your descriptions I dont think it is heat related.

Dram voltage depends on the dram itself but 1.65V should be safe. I have elpida hypers so I have used 1.75V and then was able to do 1.8V when I put a fan on them.

The cpu northbridge or imc (NOT the NB1.8V) can be pushed to as high as your cpu voltage but it will also increase your cpu temprature so up it slowly to see how much it affects temp.

I cant stress this enough. Yes the processor can hit 70C BUT you lose your oc headroom after 60C. If you are looking for max oc try not to go past 60C on AMD FX processors.

    Ok my settings:

    DRAM OC RATIO: DDR3 1600MHz
    CPU RATIO: 21
    CPU/NB FREQ: 2400MHz
    HT LINK SPEED: 2400MHz
    CPU/NB VOLT: MANUAL
    CPU VOLT: 1.4437
    CPU/NB VOLT: 1.3
    DRAM VOLT: 1.525

    everything is auto

    Thanks again

If you have a thermal probe or IR thermometer, then check your VRM temperatures to make sure that they are not at an unsafe temperature. Usually motherboards with no heatsinks on the VRM, with a 4 phase power delivery for the CPU, are unable to handle more than .02-.05V over stock (1.375V) CPU voltage before VRM protection starts kicking in in order to prevent the VRM's from blowing out.

Make sure the VRM's are not hitting 100C if they are getting close, then get heatsinks for them.

Looks like you have your cpu/nb frequency oc slightly at 2400mhz. I believe stock is 2200mhz. Try putting your cpu/nb and htlink to 2200mhz and then test if you can oc your processor higher. If you want to oc your cpu/nb then up the volt on it but again this causes the cpu to be hotter. Goodluck.

dram voltage seems low too. AMD does not like low voltages on the dram try upping it to 1.6v and try ocing again

Thanks, i'll give it a go. I read that pushing the AMD over 4.5Ghz isn't really worth it because of the boards bottleneck? (using this mobo)

I'd like to get to 4.4Ghz stable, 4.2 seems quite stable atm after a few days gaming, but i'll make the suggested tweeks and see if it stable and not too hot

With the AM3 platform, the all of the motherboards perform about the same since they are implementing the same SOC's made by AMD. the main area where they set them self apart is with addon components such as the USB controllers, and power delivery. For example very few AMD boards can handle the power required to get the 8350 to 5+ GHz (pushing close to 1.55-1.6V into the CPU). For your board, I have doubts if it is even maintaining a stable CPU voltage at 1.45V + overclock.
