Default Selling Desktop, erasing old drives

Does anyone have a software that can erase drives 7 or more times what ever the requirement is. Not saying i'm creating my own nuclear bombs, but i'd much rather my info banks and all these good things stay mine. Yet i don't exactly want to loose money by selling it driveless.

http://www.dban.org/ and just start zeroing all the drives, do it multiple times if you're super paranoid. Personally I just pull the drives and shoot them, as they're not really worth the chance of that data getting out. I've bought servers with zeroed drives before and there was still recoverable data.

Alright, so maybe i'll just get a cheapo drive at best buy or something and stick it in with no OS or something like that.

CCleaner it does it from inside windows and does up to 24 passes. Be careful to only erase the one you want..

I am partial to Partition Guru, but there are a couple products on their site that might work for you. http://www.eassos.com/
Let me know if you need anything and I will do my best to help or find someone for you.

I agree with getting another drive and throwing it in there. Best guarantee of protection.

How much is your time worth to you? Hard drives nowadays are absurdly cheap... save the hours you'd spend configuring, running, and later, fretting, over this process, and follow everyone else's advice to get a cheap new HDD. Then, take your old one, save it for use in another box later, or better yet, disassemble it and harvest the wicked strong rare earth magnets from inside :D

Look Up the Guthman method. It's the most secure data erase known to man.

I have studied this topic pretty extensively over many years. I recommend DBAN, and I recommend a single pass with zeroes.

    http://www.dban.org/

There was a company that put up a challenge for years, probably over 10 years, where they would give like $5000 to anybody who could recover any data from their hard drives that had been single pass zeroed. Nobody ever collected on it. The concepts that Gutman and other theories are based on are decades old and we've come to understand that it's pretty much impossible to recover anything from a single pass zeroed drive. If you're really paranoid, single pass random write it, then single pass zero it and call it done. Some people will go to the extremes on it after they do that though, including shooting the platters with a shotgun or drilling holes through them (I don't recommend it for safety reasons).

I have a friend that keeps thermite in his case on his drives and has a button rigged on the case that when pressed will ignite the thermite and melt the drives. There is a lot of fear and misunderstandings in the history of this topic.

DBAN autonuke will do a DoD and HIPAA certified 3 pass wipe, my company (UPMC) uses it for drive wipes, especially when we plan on selling machines after they have passed their time.
