    Default WarThunder: Dev Team update during 2yr Celebraion (Russian vid translation)

    If you have seen this video posted on the WarThunder YouTube Channel and are wondering what they heck they are saying - then wonder no more. I'll translate it for you!

    The first 12 minutes is game update. The rest of it - QnA session. I will post the game update stuff first, and then will follow up with QnA at some later time (some answers were very interesting).

    Quick note - I am not translating verbatim (some jokes were terrible), but very close.

    Part 1 - Intros:
    Jurij Titarjov - drawing 3d pics of planes
    Stas Zvjagin - programmer, working on server and matchmaking
    Kirill Yudincev - Creative Director
    Kirill Vastricov - damage modeling of planes
    Slava Bulannikov - Game design, Tanks
    Sergej Volkov, Sergej Usik, Ivan Petrov - flight models


    Part 2 (1:16) - Steel Generals
    by Vyacheslav (Slava for short) Bulannikov
    We already demoed some of the American tanks, but not all. There will be about 30 machines in the patch. We will try to add to the game the most popular and most recognizable American tanks.
    There will be 4 types in the patch:
    1. Anti-Air
    2. Light
    3. Medium
    4. combined Heavy/TD group


    American tanks will have several unique features:
    • greater gun depression
    • later models will have smaller chance of fire due to wet ammo racks
    • powerful guns
    • emphasis on AP rounds over HE rounds
    • overall American tanks are high tech, with decent armor, and powerful guns


    Part 3 (2:33) - additional patch 1.45 changes
    by Kirill Yudincev
    Besides American tanks, the plan for 1.45 is to get flight models for all planes to the "tournament ready" state. Meaning that all flight characteristics for all planes in game will be as close to realistic as possible. After that the team will only be looking at individual planes to fine tune their behavior in flight, which typically requires a lot of research work. This is ongoing process that will continue. However, there are no plans to make any more global flight model changes after 1.45.
    1.45 will see additional experimentation with battle modes:
    • Realistic - New match making for RB sessions will be tested. Idea is to shorten the queue time, shorten duration of battles, and increase amount of players in battles.
    • Sim - never-ending battle mode will be tested.


    Part 4 (4:34) - past patch 1.45
    Most work after 1.45 will be on end-game contend, specifically - Tournament features:
    • Open Rating tournaments, where matching based on player experience
    • Play Off Tournaments
    • More work on Tournament management interface. Idea is to make it easy to organize and host both Dev and Player Tournaments.


    Part 5 (7:02) - Battle Missions
    Besides experiments on battle modes, physics, rendering, technical aspects, and design Events will be another focus. Experience so far shows that while all players cannot agree on what they want, they do like to try out new things. One idea is to introduce optional Events and Battle mission that will be available to individual players within game and will take place parallel to the main game. In-game items will act as both objectives and rewards. This system will also have a feature that will support player created missions.
    This new Event/Mission system will be the next big feature of the game.

    Part 6 (9:00) - Game Release in 2015!
    (Kirill was making jokes and trying to justify duration of development and Beta. To summarize - "Thank You for your help, we could have not done it without you, Release is in 2015")

    Part 7 (10:56) - Post Release
    Development will not stop after Release. Release simply means that the basics have been locked and will not change. If you leave the game after release, you will not need to re-learn the basics if you come back later.
    The two major contents after the release will be Naval Forces and Global War. Naval forces are not expected to change the game drastically, and Global War will be the end-game content.


    Part 8 – from 12:00 until end is the QnA session. There were some interesting topics covered (e.g. what happened to Naval Forces, how BR is determined, etc). I post that within couple of days.

    Always the optimist I expect US tanks to cathc fire when you look at them and burn better than a Zero, have weak guns and only late/special models/models not used by the US being in the tech tree...


    Always nice with info however, but nothing on what planes added in the next patch? Like early P-40s, P-51 B/C (and the Alison ones), P-47D-15 etc? YEah, and another zillion under tiered Yaks and Fw 190s of course...

    no, nothing specific that I remember. There was some plane related in QnA, but nothing about the models that you mentioned.

    In case anyone missed - WarThunder released the American tech tree today. I believe these are the 30 vehicles that were mentioned in the video.

    I believe somewhere in the video they mentioned that American tanks will be released in two phases. So TDs are coming, but in a later follow up patch.

    QnA Translation Part 1 (12:00 – 22:31)

    1. Will ISU152 [soviet TD] be changed?
    Yes. Team already working on SU122-54 which will be the new top tier, and the ISU152 will be under it.

    2. Why is there so much free Convertible RP being awarded? Is it possible to make the transfer cheaper, or instead change some of it to pure RP gain?
    It was never considered as free RP. If you don’t want to pay for it – don’t use it.
    No considerations are being made to change the working of it. The rate of the regular RP gain is efficient, and there continue to be events that will offer temporary discounts on RP transfer.

    3. Where are Naval Forces and when will they be introduced?
    In early 2013 there was a Navy alpha test in the office. As a result of the test - the team has switched all efforts on vehicles instead.
    The issue is that real naval battles are very long. From 30 mins to 24 hours. Thus, it is somewhat difficult to simulate that in Warthunder. Typically movements of tanks and planes is somewhat sped up. It is possible to do the same to the ships, but only to an extent. E.G. – we cannot make ships go faster than tanks and planes.
    Thus, all development on Navies is currently on hold. There are several design ideas on how to address the battle duration issues, but those will not be addressed until next year. So Navy will most likely be an end-game content patch sometime after the Release date.

    4. How come you went away with 20 ranks of planes.
    The new BRs system allows adjusting of individual planes without touching the entire system. New system also allows for robust and faster progression.
    There was no real change. BRs replace the old ranks. Game went from 20 ranks to 25. New ranks are simply called BRs. This was always the original design. The previous one was a placeholder that had to be put in place before all plane models were released. While the previous system was in place the game’s site clearly stated that it was a temporary one.

    5. When British tank will be introduced?
    Definitely after Americans. American tanks will be released in 2 patches. First patch will have amount of tanks sufficient for initial testing. Second patch will have few more, like TDs for example. After that we shall begin on the British tanks. Technically we already started - documentation is being collected, some models already exist.

    6. How do you determine BR for new vehicles.
    Initially designers would look at similar vehicles and apply a similar ratings, adjusting it as needed.
    Afterwards the BR is adjusted based on the vehicle’s performance statistics that are collected during the first 1-4 weeks from introduction of the new machine.
    BR calculation includes:
    • destroyed planes
    • destroyed grounds units
    • destroyed bases
    • captured bases
    • assists
    • hits
    • deaths
    • average life of the vehicle in battle
    • average efficiency in battle

    7. Have you considered introducing Artillery?
    Same way as it is being used in other games - No. WT is a realistic game and on the maps and missions that we have Artillery will not be able to fulfill its mission. For example, Artillery will not be able to precisely hit tank's top armor from kilometers away.
    Artillery was mostly used to shell enemy defensive positions, like trenches. So we don’t really need it in game.

    8. Two part question:
    a) Why BR for premium vehicles is different from regular.
    b) Will there a balancing based on years

    a) BR is based on stats. For premium - BR also accounts for fact that no research or improvement can be done to the equipment. [MO comment - he didn't really answer the question, so this is the best summary I can pull out of his roundabout musings.]
    b) Question was answered about 500 times. Balancing based on years is impossible. It will mean that you will be flying bi-planes vs B-17, or i-16 vs ME262.

    9. Will we have wheeled vehicles?
    Yes, but only after at least the minimum for all trees are released.

    10. Will the later American tanks have gun stabilizers and ballistic shielding?
    We are working on stabilizers right now. Some tanks already have vertical stabilizers in-game. Captured Sherman and American tanks will have much better gun stabilizers. However, it is important to keep in mind that historically the stabilizers that were in use at the time were not designed for firing on the move. They were used to minimize the time it was used to bring the gun to bear after coming to a full stop. T34 has a similar device.

    11. When will the Global Map and World War be available?
    Global Map - we haven't really promised anything.
    We are currently actively looking into three different concepts for the Global War. It will be after Naval Forces and after everything else.
    Global War will be sometimes in 2015.

    12. Why in RB games Japanese rank 4 planes repairs are so expensive.
    Statistically - the more planes earn, the more expensive repairs are.

    13. What is the status on building destruction models? Will they collapse completely, or will some portions remain?
    A part of a building will always remain, but most of it will be collapsible.
    No ETA on new models. Tam is working on resolving issues with gameplay and production.

    14. Will we ever have blueprint tanks?
    Completely paper tanks – highly unlikely. Because it is very difficult for us. But everything that was in iron, that was driven, and that was firing …

    QnA Translation Part 2 (from 22:31)

    15. Do developers think it's normal when you have 1 piston aircraft in the team of jets?
    There are two elements to the fair balances teams: are the allied aircraft balanced, and do we have a fair chance against the enemy team? In particular with pistons, some of the entry jets are worse than pistons, so pistons and jets will always meet in random matches. The Matchmaker picks from what is in queue, so it cannot just generate piston only or jet only matches.

    16. Introduced kill-cams showed that the damage is random. Will the randomness ever change?
    Damage is random by design and that will not change. The only way to change that is to maybe apply hit points. However, that would be not realistic. As long as the shell penetrates the armor, the actual damage impact will be random. Some HE ammunition will simply blow up the tank after penetration, so that's not random. However, damage from most ammunition after penetration will be random. So there is always a choice of what ammunition to use.

    17. Will German have smoke grenades?
    Smoke screens are visual changes and thus will impact computer performances for some of the clients. Back in the day in "Quake" a rocket launcher would cause dramatic drop in fps, allowing you to win by impacting fps rate of the targeted player. Smoke screens will end up being used the same way, so most likely we will not implement that.

    18. Will there be add-on top modules introduced for the tanks (like range finders for Germans, different shape turrets for KV, etc.).
    Most likely we will not be implementing anything that would change the shape of the tank. It might be released as separate modification package.
    Range Finders - yes. We are working on commander crew skill that will help with range finding.

    19. When will we have a true Clan Wars? e.g. 16 vs 16?
    Question is not a simple one. Right now we have 16 vs 16, but those are not popular so the queues are long and battles are rare. We are working on different concepts for Clan Wars. However, no set plans at the moment.

    20. Where do we get data for flight models?
    Data is collected over several phases:
    a. Historical documents or similar sources
    b. Verification of the data. This is because sometimes you have way too many or not enough sources. Thus, we do some basic calculations to validate the information that was collected.
    c. From collected characteristics we calculate aerodynamic coefficients similar to how it is done in real live. That gives us the flight model.

    21. How come some later era planes have BRs that are lower than some planes from earlier era?
    That's one of the reasons why the BR system was changed from 20 ranks. The BR system allows us to tweak planes without changing the overall player progression. Thus, situations like that sort of happened and were not done on purpose. Also, the Rank is tied to historical periods, while BRs are based on real characteristics. There are also situations where you might have some early and rare aircrafts that are competing against later mass produced machines with average characteristics.

    22. In one of the forum posts you said that BRs will be removed. When will that happen?
    This was planned for Realistic Battles only. Originally it was planned for 1.43, but for technical reasons it was delayed until "Steel Generals"

    23. Will there be individual missions for Tanks?
    Yes

    24. Soviets are losing to Germans in Ground RBs very often because T34 only has 1 life?
    We have statistics and we are following to make sure that there are no lopsided balances for any of the sides. Our stats show that this is not the case, although we realize that sometimes individual experience might be otherwise.

    25. Will the Clan battles in RB be divided into 3 types: ground, air, and ground and air?
    Most likely no. Currently we just don't have enough players, so the queues will be longer. Instead we will experiment with timed Tournaments where you will be able to pick a particular type.

    26. Will the Clan battles be rebalances do that the top 10 don’t pwn everyone else?
    The new balance is almost completed and will be based on clan's rating.

    27. Will there be any changes to how blank camouflage templates are handles? Right now it takes over a week to design one.
    Yes we are working on this. Early next year we will have new templates where all you need to do is change color and it will be ready to use.

    28. Do we have a target number of subscribers?
    No. We just want to make sure that we have a good number of players for all modes, but there is no real target number.

    29. How different is AB vs RB, and do we need separate BRs for each?
    Yes. While the differences are not too drastic for most planes, for some vehicles the impact from spinning, stalling, WEP, and rudder control can completely change the performance characteristics, thus resulting in a different BR.

    30: Will ever the British and US get some lower BR, low tier aircraft like early P-40s, Razorback P-47s, more Hurricanes instead of another shite load of Fucker Wulfs and Yaks and LaGGs that simply are just similar to already exsisting shite? The Brits have the lowest no of a/c..
    No, we only like to add never flown, barely flown, proposed shite aircraft and nothing that was actually used en masse. En we love to make shite like the Me 163 that was shite for real and/or did not work anywhere near close how to they are in Derp Th.. War Thunder. And make other shite like the terrible LaGG overperform like Hell. Everyone knows the frickin´ Ishak was the fastest climber, diver and could easily keep up to a Corsair in a straight line and in a dive no problem..

    Will the match maker ever stop being ridicolous like Hell and over-tier us like Hell?

    So when do we think next patch is coming - just before Christmas? Filled with Yank-tanks, a million Yaks & LaGGs, undertiered 190s, fantasy-planes like I-185s, a bunch of blueprint only jet-shite and absolutely no Hurricane Mk. IIc, no P-40 B/C, no P-51, P-51A/B/C and no P-47D-15s>...
