Default Windows 8.1 -Won't download updates

I bought a laptop for web browsing when I'm elsewhere in my place. When I check for updates it'll give me a list of updates and stuff, but when I click download they don't. Sits there at 0% forever. I did a refresh and everything. Even used www.wsusoffline.net and nada. Win8.1 is really starting to chap my ass.

Go to control panel, Icons mode, troubleshooting, System and Security, and run the windows update troubleshooter as an admin. Probably a Registration or cache issue with the updater system. I've had that before, this fixed it for me.

Should I reboot after running it?

That may have fixed it for you but that doesn't seem like it's the issue, it seems to be the OS itself.

My advice is that you do one of the following Dibola.

    1. If you have the disc for Windows 8.1 reinstall the OS. If you don't have the disc, go to your local retailer and see if you can buy one. From the sounds of it you've got warranty on that, probably not an extended version but a 30-day or whatever the store you bought it from's policy.

2.The updates you're trying to install are too big, meaning that space on your HDD is either full or too small for what you're trying to install. Meaning you will have uninstall unwanted/unused programs or anything the uses up memory.

I had something similar happen to me, it turned out I had some malware blocking updating. I ran Malware Bytes in safe mode and it fixed it.

Another idea would be to delete the distribution cache that the updates dump into from the windows update - you likely have one or more that started to download and failed in such a manner that it tries to resume but gets stuck.

Believe it's Windows\software distribution\downloads and - but I'm not at work and can't see my stuff there...
