Default Considering a TV as a new monitor.

Hey guys, just wandering what do you think about getting a TV as a monitor? It's a 43', 4k, 120hz TV which seems fairly cheap; I consider it a good option since it's relatively big and can have plenty of windows opened while doing stuff.

I think it's a cheaper way of having a bigger display rather than buying multiple monitors

I have a Hitachi which takes 50hz on refresh
It handles fine, had it 3 years. Pictures not as clear as a monitor I assume but I never noticed it.
Only problem I'd say is that when I run games that set the hertz refresh lower than 50hz or above it. Black screen but easily fixable with alt enter!

Whats the response time like on a TV like that? For FPS, low response time is key. Also, do you have a PC that can push 4k resolution? I also think GPU's don't have proper hookups for 60hz+ at 4k so you'd be wasting the 120 hz refresh (someone correct me if I'm wrong).

Refresh will depend on the resolution and the card. Also, most TVs use software for smoothing to get higher than normal refresh rates. Using may cause tearing as vysnc will not work.

I use a 32" 1080p TV as my monitor. Crystal clear, no issues. I can still login, play BF4, and get pwnd by AOD like everyone else! ;)

It probably is cheaper, but youll need to sit farther away if you full screen for games (especially with lower FOV) or it wont be comfortable. The further away you sit, the larger the font youll need to keep it legible. 4k will help keep your pixel density from getting to low(and give everything jagged edges) as you size up all the fonts to a legible size.

4k @ 120hz sounds really high, not sure what cable can even transmit that much data unless you use two cables (if that possible? never tried/heard of it being done). And if your rig can handle that, i have a feeling price isn't an issue. Of course you could toggle between the two depending on which you wanted at the time (your pc will thank you, unless its a god amongst pcs)

Multiple monitors gives you a 'wrap around' style display. The angles you can set each screen can help it flow better, and still be well sized, also don't need to be lightyears away from the monitor.

Keep in mind, for smaller monitors (23-28in) you wont be far enough away from the monitor for 4k to make a big difference. (except: you have trained your eyes to see higher resolution/sharpness in lines colors (a graphic artist), and FPS doesn't matter, if you haven't trained your eyes to see the difference (hence why people used to 30fps can tell a difference).

Anyway, just my thoughts (probably badly formated). Ultimately its up to you, be sure to let us know what you go with! (you also didnt give a price for it or id show the flip side)(oh and the tv would be a good option if you stream netflix/watch cable, but good luck streaming 4k, and i don't think cable does 4k yet? could be wrong on that though)

TVs do not make good gaming monitors and just because your TV has a refresh of 120hz does not mean that it support that with a PC hookup.

    Nail on the head.

Reason I use a TV is because it was free and 32" is bigger than 20". I don't do hardcore professional competitive gaming though. So I see no point in spending $500 on a gaming monitor. Rather buy more beer! That's just me. I like to watch Netflix or do video editing quite a bit though. And a bigger TV vs small monitor makes it 1000x easier & better!

Unless all you play is RPG games, I wouldnt go with a TV. Along with what others said, low refresh, incompatiblity, etc. My biggest issue is on something over 27" have to physically move my head to see things. RTS and FPS's for example, I thought "hey it will be bigger so I can see the enemy better" when in all actuality its the opposite. On their sub 27" screen they can see me in their peripheral vision, whereas on anything larger than 24/27 I have to move my eyes and sometimes head to see them. Thats a good second or two and in that time you die.

Thanks to everyone for the replies.

Well, I just noticed the 120Hz refresh rate is because some thing called "Tru motion", the real refresh rate is unfortunately 60Hz. I'd have to disable that thing since it can cause some issues, like the "Soap opera effect" and so on.

-Distance is not a problem for me since my desk is big and so I could place the TV in a wide variety of positions.
-Lag input is about 55 ms I believe, which I think is extremely high, I don't know if response time and Lag input are the same thing though.
-My video card is currently a GTX970, I'm aware is not sufficient to run some games at 60fps 4k, so I'll be using another resolution while playing those.
    - I rarely play any "hardcore" multiplayer or multiplayer games in general; though I'm going to play Doom 4 and Battlefront when released. I do mostly play 3th person games like Sim City, Age of Empires and a lot of Single Player games. (4K in AoE or Age Of Mythology would be awesome)
-Also, I'm choosing a TV of a size like that to watch movies or play Wii U from a distance (I'm also aware having 4k does not improve image quality on a Bluray player nor the Wii U image quality)

55ms is quite a long time when playing video games. Most monitors are 2-5ms, but I wouldnt go anything higher than 10ms with a 60hz refresh rate.

I wouldn't recommend a TV for playing PC games...

You cant focus when shooting on range, the response times are terrible and if you sit too close to the Screen you risk damaging your eyes, but if too far away from the screen then you feel outta place, Monitors rule, get a 27" monitor with fast response time HD resolution and you get the best of both. They are fairly cheap too

Even for SP games its challenging to get used to the TV, something is always wrong with the picture.
4K resolutions...dunno, for me it feels just some hype like the 3D TV/Monitor to sell the hardware, its completely useless in games, the graphics look the same 4K or 1080p, you dont get anything special considering the Price you pay for the thing
