    Woot Computer Upgrading!

I'm thinking about upgrading my computer to a better processor or graphics card.

I've read and heard a good deal about Intel and Radeon cards.... anyone here have specific preferences?

    I'm thinking about either a R9 380x or GTX 970.

We got any nerds around here that can help?

Specific for this game it's possible that the Nvidia card (GTX 970) might be better since the strategic partnership between Nvidia & Gaijin (Dragor engine)

But I have an AMD card (R9 290X) & it performs very good in this game. Then again Tidgit has some issues with the interaction between his ADM (R9 390X I believe) & the game...

Perhaps someone esle can give you more specific info about your choice.

Long time computer geek, have built many many machines. My brand choices come from experience and personal bias, there are other good alternatives that other people like and have success with. When I build a new gaming machine it's always based on the same "formula" and designed for overclocking.

2nd fastest Fastest Intel Processor you can afford(price/performance to get the best just isn't worth it), always buy K version if available as they are unlocked with overclocking capabilities
    High end CPU cooler

ASUS Mother board designed for the processor you chose, always have different versions with lot's of feature flexibility, has best and most stable overclocking capability and have never had one fail.

Not less than 8Gb memory (16 better) rated at least the speed you intend on overclocking the memory bus. You get what you pay for with memory, stay with the name brands and check the ASUS approved part list for best overclocking results. It will cost more than budget memory, but your machine performance and overclocking stability depends on it.

2nd to the top of the line graphics card (price/performance to get the best just isn't worth it). Currently that's the Nvidia 970. NVidia has better overclocking support than AMD imho. I much prefer NVidia to AMD, consistently lead in performance and overclocking stability.

High current gaming power supply not less than 600W (although I generally run run higher 800-1000) with enough graphics card power connections to drive 2 cards.

Full size case with as many big (120mm+ fan locations) as possible, load them up intake at the bottom, bottom front, and sides, exhaust at the back, on the top and top sides. (big fans are quiet, little ones are loud).

SSD main drive, big secondary drive (1TB etc)

And don't forget the multi-DPI programmable gaming mouse :)

......opinions are my own, your mileage may vary.....

in computers, name brands DO mean a difference. Better materials = a better product/Good performance.

ANYTHING video,Nvidia.period, end of story.Best boards, best tech, best support. never let Me down.

ffs,get a decent mouse...makes no sense to buy 200$ nikes, and ur ass is using a "My Little pony' baseball glove...

last but not least.SOUNDCARD.NEVER go w/onboard sound...EVER..Idc WHAT any "geek' says. It's pure/simple logic. Use 1 part of a machine to do two things, moderately,or use 2 parts to do 2 things, damned well. Personally,I'm an audiophile and if My sound is shit, the game is shit.

as for all the other stuff?LOTS of RAM. No,MORE...there..that's perfe-wait....why...why would U even CONSIDER using a "EasyBake Oven' as a computer case?Seriously Byrd...btw,I expect pics of the new rig, complete w/Woodstock's nest on top

AMD 300 series outperformed nVidia in DX 12 tests thus far. Just a heads up.

Awesome stuff guys, thanks for your input. I do have a quality gaming mouse that I love. DPI settings and all the works rubble. ;)

I'm looking into a mechanical keyboard as well as I currently have a standard button smasher.

I do have a nice monitor and a sound system. I too am an audiophile. My sub-woofer under my desk can shake me silly while explosions go off in games. Its awesome. I also have a nice pair of gaming headphones that are very very nice. (I dabble in some av work so I have a decent amount of sound knowledge.)

I have a Z97 motherboard, so I can easily upgrade processors... I have a good bang for the buck Pentium g3258 that can overclock amazingly... but I really want a high tier CPU. So I am thinking that will be my first purchase. My current GPU is a GTX 750ti... it is good... but not great. It will need upgrading to allow me those beautiful maxed out settings on any game.

The other thing that I'm giving serious consideration is a nice SSD... I could easily swing a 240gb SSD and not miss the cash, but I am not all that savy with computer building. Trying to move my operating system to that SSD and off my HDD is a scary thought to me... I got the computer pre-built with windows pre-loaded... no software cd... That said a 1tb SSD is still kinda pricey since I have so many other things on the wishlist. LOL.

That said, any upgrading that I do, I want to go with quality. PC's are definitely true when it comes to getting out what you put in. I dont want cheap or low quality parts for sure.

The maim thing to remember is that although you want to upgrade your GPU, you will still be limited by your RAM & CPU. Too much ram & your cpu is too overloaded. Not enough ram & your cpu is bottlenecked. Your GPU will provide better graphics, yes, but you may only see a 10-20% fps increase if you don't change your cpu & ram as well.

My past upgrade went like this with War Thunder.

AMD Dual Core 6300+ with an NVidia 460oc & 4gb ram, was getting 40-50 fps on a mix of medium & high settings.

Upgraded gpu only to an NVidia 650ti, was getting 55-60 on medium high mix & 30-45 on high.

Upgraded mobo, cpu to amd fx6350, ram upgrade & 8gb, using 650ti, easy 60 fps on high ultra mix.

Final upgrade was to an r280x gpu, & another 8gb ram kit for a total of 16gb, 60+ fps on max ultra settings.

Though I will say, my cpu struggles with some games as I now have too much ram.

Very similar to my build, the only differences being I have an extra 8gb (future proofing), I still run Windows 7 (i like holding on to old OS's)

You have not specified what cpu cooler your running, if you want to OC the 4690K (main reason to get the K version) dont use the stock cooler. The are loads of OC guides & tips on the net nowadays, it is basically like following a paint by numbers.

I also have more internal drives & an external HDD, and a slightly different Mobo.

But the system is good, not touched OC-ing myself yet. Also putting some extra 120mm or 140mm fans in the case, attached to the mobo if you can to give better fan control and air flow. Anyway I am mostly just rambling now (too much coffee)

Takes one to know one, Rubble.

My system is very modest and I am still, like Marrv, running Windows 7. I use the 32 bit version because my other hobby is collecting movies, TV shows and music realted DVD's.
I use DVD 43 software to de-scramble the copy guards on the DVD's so I can copy them. This software is not compatible with 64 bit, so I have to keep this machine.

    EVGA 600W PS
    Gigabyte GA 970 series MoBo
AMD FX 4100 Quad core CPU 3.6 Gb
4 Gb Patriot ram (only 3.25 usable due to 32 bit OS)
Originally had a Radeon 6670 1 Gb card averaging 40 to 60 FPS on low settings.
Recently upgraded to a GTX 960 2 Gb card and I'm now averaging 150 to 175 FPS on high.
No overclocking capabilities due to limited ram.

This computer will have to serve me for the time being as money is short, however, my house will be paid for by Christmas
and I am planning to build me a real gaming rig. The new rig you describe, Byrd, sounds awesome. Some day I will be up there with you guys.
