Default Help me pick a monitor!!!

Hey all! I am shopping for a new monitor for myself for Xmas. I have been looking at 27" 144hz 1080p monitors in the sub $400 range. AOC, BenQ and Asus all have offerings in this range but I am worried about 1080p at 27"... is it too low of res for that size? I have long read complaints about 27" monitors at the resolution being too pixelated. Every time I get ready to pull the trigger on one, I back up and start considering 24" monitors at 1080p since they are smaller. If I got one at 24" size then I could possible snag a gsync monitor with 144hz and3d.

Aside from gaming I do use my monitor for watching movies and netflix in my bedroom so I thats why I have been leaning towards the preference for 27" size in general. Someone help!

Reading your post, i'd recommend going with 1080p 27". I have a 27" 1440p monitor, and i can very hardly tell the difference in sharpness between 1440p and 1080p w/ anti-aliasing. There is a difference if you are sitting fairly close and using very high textures (at least 2-4k textures), but 1080p 27" is not pixelated at all if using AA. So again, 1440p is only better with very high textures, and those two things are extremely taxing on your GPU. Your 670 is going to struggle with it, so unless you also plan to upgrade your card soon, your fps are going to be in the toilet with 1440p.

If you are going to watch movies from further away, make sure to get an IPS panel. I think all 27" 1080p 144hz are TN, and speaking from experience, TN will not do unless you are sitting in front of your screen. Also, IPS monitor get those superior colours and viewing angles by letting more light trough them, and thus have some IPS glow. It can be easily neutered with some indirect or bias lights, but if you game or watch movies in complete darkness, consider VA panels. I don't have experience with them, so i don't know if they perform good enough as far as viewing off-angle is concerned (although they are better then TN), but they don't have any kind of glow.

This was one I was about to buy, I currently have a 21.5" ASUS IPS panel (60hz) but I need to be smart about my money. Only drawback is the color on 144hz panels (TN vs IPS) is supposedly not as good. Really matters more in photo editing where color is a major factor. It's only 24" but My concern was also 27" at 1080p and 1440 res is expensive if you want 144hz.

@Qrow, even if you are watching straight on and gaming, IPS just looks prettier.

Yeah I haven't had a chance to compare in person but from what i've gathered that sounds right. Sucks, but if its not an issue go for it.

Ive been eyeballing these for a while now, in 27". Im not against the 24" panels as theyre cheaper and I could probably get a few more features but I want 27" for some reason. Mebe because I use a 27" thunderbolt display at work?

ASUS VG278HE 27" (has 3d but its an old monitor so Im not sure if the 3d is THAT good?)

and whats the difference between these two? AOC G2770PF and the G2770PQU? Is it that one is freesync and the other isnt?

This has been the most frustrating, complex and confusing dilemma. It sucks that the premium one has to pay to get a 144hz IPS panel or let alone a monitor with gsync.

Most of the monitors I have seen are just 3d capable due to 144hz and need extra stuff to make it work (that's why they're so cheap) and that cost upwards of $200. As for the freesync option if your signature rig is correct the fact you have an nvidia card won't work with it. You would need gsync and so far for our price range the only monitor I saw was the one I put up previously. There's probably other options, I know Qnix (s.Korean ) brand has been frequently mentioned for its lower price points and maintaining decent quality. They seem to have decent reviews and might be worth checking out.

Spend the extra money and get a gsync monitor. I grabbed an AOC 24inch 144hz gysnc for #350 over black friday and am blown away by it. My previous monitor was an ips, but in all honesty I really dont find the panel on this to be that bad. G-sync will also make your rig feel much faster, as dips below 60fps wont stutter or feel wonky. 670 is also going to be hard to run at 1440p.

So I finally pulled the trigger on a monitor and decided on the Acer XB240H. I found it for $350 over on Microcenter. 144z 1ms Gsync 3d ready 24". Cant be worse than my 10+ year old Acer monitor lol!
