Geekout Computer Build - Feedback is welcome!

    Hey hey everybody Shadow here!

So, now that I've gotten a pay raise of $2 (I know right?!), building a computer will be affordable during the summer. I've talked to a couple of good friends about the computer build and they seem to like it. This is my first computer build that I'm 100% dedicated to so far and would really appreciate some feedback on it!

    Thanks,

Personally, this is what I would build: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/4TWRjX

A 550W Power Supply for that build was insufficient. Also, there's really no need for a 1TB SSD.

    Thanks for a swift reply!

For all intents and purposes I prefer medium-ish towers, but I did replace the 550W with a 850W.

    Thanks again!

    Couple questions;
What are you looking to do with this computer?
What games will you be playing on a regular basis?
How long do you want this computer to last?
Are you planning on overclocking any components?
I'll come up with more questions as you respond and if you could quote my post when you respond I'll know instantaneously that you've replied.

Dont choose a power supply on Wattage alone. Make sure its made with quality parts. THIS IS SO IMPORTANT!!! Dont risk a $2000 PC by using a subpar PSU.

Cant go wrong with either of these. Im partial to the Corsair but the EVGA is rock solid.

Same here, I've been using Corsair PSUs for years and never had any issues. I currently have an HX series and will probably stick to Corsair for future builds, but if I had to go anywhere else, it would be EVGA.

    1) Game. Thats about it. Maybe some homework. I have a laptop for everything else.
    2) 2013 and newer games. Fallout, Battlefields, Bioshocks, Skyrim, pretty much everything I own.
    3) I want this thing to last past college and graduate school. So approx. 6 years
    4) I do, but not initially and probably just the GPU (i'm very new to OCing)

Also thanks to everyone else who replied!

    Ok a couple more questions;

What resolution are you playing at currently and are you looking to go bigger (1440p, 4K)?

    What is your budget?

Agreed. I have an EVGA myself. The G2 line is really high quality.

My laptop is FHD 1080p, and I do want to go to 1440p.

I don't exactly have a budget, it just has to be reasonable to me.

What you have spec'ed out is a pretty solid build.

While many have debated here regarding CPU performance as it relates to gaming, my recommendations here would be based on a few things:

    1) Will this rig be used for more than just gaming? I use mine for a combination of both gaming and to run several VMs at times for work-related lab environments and such, so I typically will go for higher-end CPUs and amounts of RAM for that reason.
    2) How do you plan to upgrade / refresh components as new products are released? Is this build going to be "it" for a while with little to no changes, or do you like to stay on top of things as they release?
    3) What's your timetable? If you can wait a little longer, the new GTX X80 cards are due out in June, so it would certainly be worth waiting for if you could.

With that in mind, and assuming "Yes" to the points above, I would make the following recommendations:

    1) CPU: Consider going the "E" route vs. Skylake. It's a different pin configuration (LGA2011-V3 vs. LGA1151) so it would also require a different motherboard. It would also give you the advantages of the X99 chipset which is superior to the Z170 chipset that Skylake uses. Right now, the Haswell-E is currently available (what I run - 5820K) with Broadwell-E due out in Q2. It will leverage the same LGA2011-V3 socket so won't require a motherboard upgrade. Rumors are that when they release Skylake-E in 2017, it may or may not leverage the same LGA2011-V3 socket, but if it does, that's total future-proof, as any successor to Skylake will require a motherboard replacement due to definite socket change anyway. The "E" line of CPUs gives more longevity, regardless.

    2) Motherboard: Regardless of which route you go (Skylake or otherwise), make sure it has onboard m.2 PCI-Express 3.0 x4 support (the one you currently have in your potential build does). Leads to my recommendation for SSD...

    3) SSD: If you can afford to do so, keep the current 1.0 TB SSD you have in the build as the secondary drive and look at going with the Samsung 950 Pro as the primary drive. Using the m.2 PCI-Express 3.0 x4 feature blows the doors off of typical SSDs since it has a better throughput 32 Gbps vs. 6 Gbps). They currently have a 256 GB and 512 GB option available. You could do this with your current build if you don't change anything else. If anything, I would say change the 1.0 TB drive to a 500 GB drive, and then go with the 256 GB or 512 GB Samsung 950 Pro.

    4) GPU: With Pascal coming in June, and the latest leaks being that they're going to release the X80, X80 Ti and X80 Titan at launch, This may be the best reason to wait (if you can). Or, you can go the route I did and just plan on potentially selling the 980 Ti later on :)

All that to say...we all have our opinions here and there's some really top-notch contributors in this forum that love this stuff. The constant feedback is always fun :)

Thanks to everyone who replied to my thread!

I have taken all the feedback I have gotten into consideration and have indeed changed a few things.

On a related note, when I do build this monster I'd really appreciate some OC advice for at least my GPU and more than likely my CPU as well.

Once again I'd like to thank everyone who posted a reply and gave feedback, I honestly appreciate it!

The first build is not bad, but not really great either. I have never seen a Cryorig Cooler in action, so IDK how good they are, but you can buy a well known cooler that has a higher CFM rating than it for less money. The allmighty Coolermaster Hyper 212 Evo! No need for extra Thermal Paste, coolers normally come with it. No need for a 1 TB SSD, that's super overkill. And Mushkin isn't exactly well known in the SSD community...

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/KNnW23 is a much better overall build.

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/gcCfYJ is even better, as it's built more for gaming. You would get really low thermal temps, and you could OC to high heavens. And, I know the case is a Full Tower, but it's one of the best cases you can buy that isn't super overpriced.

Don't know if this has been mentioned yet, but if you are already spending 200+ on a MOBO, buy one with wifi built in.

Seconded. That's why I included the ASUS Maximus VIII Impact in my interpretation.

Eh, i've been fortunate enough to be able to have a Wired connection nearby at all times. I'll probably need to buy a PCI-E 1x AC adaptor soon for college.
