GIFs themselves are not necessarily frowned upon. As long as they are done tastefully, and with consideration for filesize (optimization is always a good idea), it shouldn't be an issue. Big factors that may attract negative attention are:
- images with lots of distracting motion, animation
- images that are unnecessarily heavy (think about the people who browse the forums on mobile devices who *don't* have unlimited data plans)
- signatures that are abnormally large (if your signature has a 1:2, 1:1 ratio, it's probably too big)
The lesson to take away from all of this is: just because you can do something doesn't mean you should. :P
