    Default Any thoughts on headset

    So I'm getting tired of having to buy a new headset every other year due to the cable or plug having problems.

    What do you all think about wireless headsets such as this ?

    I do not personally use those. I have had really good luck with my cooler master storm sirus headset. I have the tactical mixer with mine, it allows me to set the volume of each individual speaker as it is true 5.1 surround.

    Heres a link to there site I do not know if you can still get them tho. Been using for 3 years now.

    If you have the money to spend, get a set of good over ear headphones like the Audio Technica M50 or AD7 and then get an Antlion ModMic to use as the microphone. You'll get sound quality miles ahead of the gaming headsets and a really well built microphone. If you have some extra cash to spare still, you can pick up a decent sound card as well with a dedicated headphone amp to help drive those headphones incase onboard audio isn't cutting it for you.

    Currently I'm using a pair of Beyerdynamics DT880 (600 Ohm) with an Antlion ModMic and a Xonar Essence STX.

    Antlion ModMic: http://www.modmic.com/

    For reviews on over ear headphones: http://www.head-fi.org/products/category/over-ear

    M50's can be had for fairly cheap and are easy to drive w/o headphone amps and have one of the best Price to Performance ratio.

    I second getting a dedicated pair of headphones and a mic. That will ensure if one part breaks, at least you won't be completely out of luck.

    Makes sense, so you are good with wire vs wireless ?

    I have a built in sound blaster with my board so that's not a issue + I only have one slot in a mini itx.

    You should be fine with the built in sound card. Amp's become an issue when you get into high impedance headphones. Around the 100Ohm mark, some amplification is required as you'll notice that everything sounds extremely quiet. The M50's are only 38 Ohm according to their spec sheet so you should be fine with the built in sound blaster card and also they're fine to use with phones/tabets/mp3 players.

    Another thing to consider;

    If you are thinking of getting a set of studio/audiophile quality headphones that cost a couple hundred, try to find some stores nearby that carry various brands and try them out. Audio is very subjective and what may be the best sounding thing might not be the best once you actually listen to it. Load up your favourite music on your phone/ipod and take it in and try the headphones on for a few minutes to see how they sound like and how comfortable they are. Once you have them picked, the mic can be attached to any headphone easily.

    Also a lot of the higher end headphones come with removable cables for easy transportation and carrying cases so you can always replace a cable in the future if you do manage to damage it somehow. The M50x come with the removable cable. Not sure if the non removable coiled and straight cable versions of the M50 are sold still.

    Most high end headphones have the 1/4 in connector as standard however I know for mine has the 1/4 in connector as a screw on to the 3.5mm. Converters are extremely cheap as well from Amazon or your local audio or tech store or monoprice.

    I use the Astro A40 TR but they are expensive. If you are willing to drop 250 dollars on them then go for it.
