Default What should I upgrade to for 144fps

I got a new monitor a few months ago, Asus for 144fps. I barely manage to get it on Overwatch on low settings. I'm looking to upgrade my rig because I want to get 144fps for Destiny 2 when it comes out. I was thinking about upgrading to gt 970 but I read my CPU might bottle neck it.

    My current setup.
    GTX 960 2 gb
    AMD FX 6300
    16 gb ddr 3

I'm not the most computer savvy lol. What should I do?

Upgrade all CPU, Mobo, RAM, GPU if you want to run 144 FPS @ 1080p
    Something like:
    i5 6600k
    GTX 1070
    DDR4 16 GB

    should do the magic.
    Or
    r5 1600
    GTX 1070
    DDR4 16 GB

Is there anyway to upgrade just the gpu to get a steady 144 or do i need to upgrade all 3?

Your CPU will be a huge bottleneck if you get GTX 1080 for example. So, yeah, upgrade CPU, RAM, Motherboard and GPU if you want to run steady 144.

Just for reference for you... I run on low/med @1080p settings in OW and get 144fps pretty constant with an i5 6500k, 970 gpu and 16gb ddr3. I dont know what the recommended specs for Destiny 2 is (dont think its announced) but you might wanna wait for that and see what they recommend. You've got a few months yet before it releases.

Unfortunately the fx 6300 is like half a i5 6600k.

    For overwatch,
If you care more about compettiveness and performance over looks,
try play at a lower resolution. I'm assuming you are in 1080p
This will allow you to get more fps without upgrading.

As for destiny 2, it looks like if you want to hit 120fps, you will have to upgrade.

Yikes. I just bought this computer new a year ago. I know I'm circling the wagon, but would the higher fx 8300? make a difference so I don't get bottlenecked?

I get 130+ currently on Overwatch with dips to ~115, but everything is set to low. I want to play Destiny 2 at a similar fps without breaking the bank.

It's really an odd time to upgrade in general. Gpu prices are high due to mining, and ram prices have been up due to supply shortage. Ryzen is just getting over its launch issues and Intel x299 has just come out. The FX series has already passed its lifespan and you should upgrade to a different socket for more longevity.

I'd guess at 75-90Hz, but defintely not 144.
I think an fx8300 would defintely bottleneck a gtx 1070. But i'm not too sure.

This is only for 1080p 144 FPS. If you are going for 1440p and 144 FPS, you will need a 1080Ti most likely.

And i7 to unlock full potential of that GPU.

8300 vs 6300 in games would produce very minimal results, if any. Not worth the upgrade by any means.
If you want a CPU upgrade you'll be needing a new motherboard and likely RAM as well.

Yeah, I had to build all new to get out of that FX series. Moved to Intel LGA 1151 socket. Much better.

    My current Specs are:

    GPU: GTX 1080
    CPU: i7 6700K
    RAM: 16GB RAM

Can run Overwatch with resolution scale (140% or something like that) with steady 144fps, ultra settings.

On the other hand, games such as Battlefield 1, Battlefront, DOOM or Quake Champions are difficult to maintain at 144fps with ultra settings, but fps rarely drop below 100fps.

I want to assume Destiny 2 will run similarly like the games mentioned, also assuming good optimization it shouldn't be hard running the game at 144fps at high - ultra settings.

If you want to play in higher resolutions like 1440p it's going to be way harder to get those 144fps.

Destiny 2 looks pretty well optimized. A single 1080Ti was shown by EVGA to run the game at 4K Smooth 60 FPS. So, I expect 1440p at 144hz should be no sweat for a 1080 or 1080Ti, and 1080p 144hz would be no problem for the 1070, maybe even the 1060 6GB if we are hopeful.

    My Specs:

    GPU: GTX 1080ti
    CPU: i7 6850K
    RAM: 64GB RAM
Monitor: Asus ROG Swift PG278R 165"Hz

I play at 1440p and my fps has been 80-168.

I will pretty much repeat what everyone is saying here. Anything before AM4 (Ryzen) on AMD is really not that good, if you are doing anything about 1080p. You might be able to get away with just a better GPU if doing 1080p at 144fps but dont expect to run everything Ultra settings. Intel is still the leader for gaming so I would recommend an i5 or i7 if you have the money.
