    Default New PC Build

    Hi All,

Just seeking some input for a new system I am proposing to build. The computer is for my parents and I'm trying to keep it below £500. Speed is important but they wont be gaming or anything.

I priced the parts below on Ebuyer.co.uk as thats who I normally buy from

    Intel Core I5-7400 3.00GHZ Socket 1151 6MB Retail Boxed Processor 766080 8 in stock £167.99 £167.99
    Toshiba P300 1TB 3.5'' SATA High-Performance Hard Drive (OEM) 726222 > 25 in stock £38.98 £38.98
    Toshiba 240GB A100 2.5" Internal SATA III SSD 759034 10 in stock £74.99 £74.99
    Gigabyte GA-H110M-S2H Socket LGA 1151 VGA DVI-D HDMI Micro ATX Motherboard 727229 47 in stock £51.00 £51.00
    Windows 10 Home 64-bit OEM 718644 155 in stock £88.66 £88.66

I know I need a PSU, RAM and GFX Card.

I was hoping I could use the Ram and GFX from my old system

Gigabyte GTX 660 OC 2GB GDDR5 Dual DVI HDMI DisplayPort PCI-E Graphics Card
    Crucial Ballistix Sport VLP 8GB DDR3 1600MT/s BLS2C4G3D1609ES2LX0CEU

All tips, advice, recommendations etc welcome.

What is the main purpose of this build? What would your parents be using the system for?

You don't really need a GPU if they will not be gaming. Just use the integrated Intel graphics.

You can also save some money by not buying a hard copy of Windows. You can buy an Product Key and download Windows 10 from Microsoft website. Product key costs around $30.
Other than that, it should be a fine build for their needs. I would also consider looking into Ryzen as well, might be a better bang for a buck for a better performance.

First of all, that motherboard takes DDR4 RAM, so your old RAM won't work in it.
Second, I concur on the integrated graphics. If you aren't gaming, it's a waste of a card.
Third, I would go for the i3-7350K processor. It's significantly faster than the i5-7400 unless you are doing multi-threading.
Also, do you have a case already?

The main purpose of the PC will be web browsing and maybe the odd document in MS Office nothing to taxing.

Didn't realise that about windows. So I presume I just buy it on here then download and burn to a DVD.

I have the GPU lying here so may as well use it as I cant see it being any use to me again, wasn't sure about the RAM tho

I used to use AMD all the time but haven't in a while so not quite sure which chip to go for. Will do some research.

The i3-7350K doesn't come with a stock cooler (all you need) so the 7100 or 7300 might be a better choice.

I'll just toss in my thought on this build theses parts may not be available to in the UK, I tried to build a cart in the place you listed but it wanted me to sign up first. I would avoid an external GPU, it will add unnecessary power usage and noise to you build. I found a Motherboard that had a M.2 slot on it, although the one selected isn't as fast as many of them they are easy to install and require no wires which make installing in a slim case a breeze. The case isn't listed at PC parts picker so it's a separate link, it's a slim case with w 300W PSU. If you get a Widows code for 30 pounds then you should be in your budget.

So, here are my thoughts about the build for your parent's needs.
I picked the Ryzen cause it is a better option for production and offers better performance for the money for production. Since they are not going to game then gaming performance is not important here. In daily use AMD beats Intel now in price and performance.
Because Ryzen does not have an integrated graphics you will need a GPU so I picked an RX 460, which is decent enough for a lot of stuff, even for some light games. Or you can simply throw in your GTX 660
Because they are going to brows the internet, watch movies and work on Microsoft Office, you do not need an HDD, just get 500 GB SSD and it will be more than enough. In case they need even more storage then you can always get them an External HDD.

    So, here is that build:

IMHO this build is the best option out of every option that is listed in this thread. This CPU is on par with i7 4770k. See for yourself: http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare...70K/3921vs1537

Also, as I said earlier, you can save a lot of money on OS if you only buy a Product Key.
For example you can get it here (there are many places where you can buy it):
    http://www.play-asia.com/microsoft-w...-oem/13/709747

You download Windows 10 installation here on Microsoft support page:
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/soft...load/windows10

Once you download Windows and prepare your bootable Windows Installation USB drive, then you can install Windows and use that Product Key to activate Windows.

Thanks for all the tips guys, really appreciate it. I'm going to take Zeds advice and go with the Ryzen along with the bigger SSD (they already have an external HDD)

    Thanks again!!!

If its just for clerical use my i5 4690k can play Battlefield 4 lol..

You could also pick up a used laptop for them around $200 $300 used or new.
