Keyboard: Corsair K65 lux. I don't need a 10 key and like the extra room on my desk for my condenser microphone :)

The first one I bought was a dud, one of the lights didn't work. The 2nd one I got is a champ.

Corsairs gaming keyboards and mice are nice. I've never tried a mouse from them, but I did buy one for my wife. She likes it. I personally use a Mamba tournament edition. I had a G900 before that and it got the infamous double click Logitech issue. It's pretty common on a lot of their gaming mice.

Ive had a laptop so I am out of the loop. Are mechanical keyboards preferred to others? If so why?

I prefer mechanical for everything, but for gaming they are preferred. There is a quicker response time, the membrane keyboards also wear out faster and have issues since the membrane is a solid piece

Yes. It's just more responsive and more ergonomic.
I use my Mechanical keyboard also for work on daily basis. I have a laptop right beside me always opened and connected together with my Desktop through an app "Synergy" that allows to use one mouse and one keyboard over multiple computers. So, technically I use this keyboard also for laptop, it's just so much more comfortable to type. The only down side for mechanical keyboards is that they are loud.

Could go with a red, brown or black switch to quiet it down, but blue and green are really loud

True but it's still much louder than non mechanical keyboard.

Also depends on the person typing. I have a coworker who has a membrane keyboard and it is much louder than my blue switch, I feel sorry for his poor keyboard.

well, when I use keyboard on my laptop you can barely even here that I'm typing (only if you are sitting right next to me). I'm pressing keys pretty gently. That's why I prefer also mechanical keyboard for daily use at work but because it is mechanical it will always be louder than membrane.

    I use Razer Deathstalker.

Personal preference but I love the way it feels. And it's cheap. Win/win situation. :)

Check out this keyboard. It's a good deal on Amazon now. I've been using Razer BlackWidow for 2 years now and have no issues. Although, I was not a fan of Razer Mamba Tournament Edition mouse, it had tracking issues and was RMA two times, both times they shipped me brand new unit. Razer customer service is awesome but some products might not be perfect. Can't say anything bad about their keyboards, tho.
