    Default Boot to Black

    Hi folks,
I have a 3 monitor setup on my PC. Sometimes when I turn on my PC, the main monitor will come out of standby, and stay on a black screen while the remaining two monitors don't come out of black screen. Sometimes, all three monitors will come off standby and show a black screen. Sometimes, none of my monitors will come off standby. The fix is to simply do a quick reboot using my cases Reset button, and then it boots normally.

I'm not sure what could be causing this intermittently, so far I haven't observed any pattern to it.

    Any ideas?

    Here's my specs:
Operating System: Windows 10 Pro 64bit
    Case: Thermaltake Element V Case
    Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 980 @ 3.33GHz (12 CPUs), ~3.3GHz
    Memory: 24GB DDR3
    DirectX Version: DirectX 12
Card name: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070
    400GB SSD
    2TB HDD
    2x 500GB HDD in RAID
    PSU: 750W

Are all three of your monitors using HDMI I think it’s less of a computer issue and more of a monitor/cord issue is what it sounds like. If you unplug one of the monitors and only use 2 does the same thing happen? If not try and move around the hdmi cords plugged into a different slot on the graphics card so say you are using 3 of the 4 move 1 into the 4th one maybe it’s a bad port that only picks up some of the time.

Nope. One uses HDMI. One uses a Display Port, one uses HDMI and one uses DVI. 3 different monitors, all LG, two rectangular 23" (I think) and one square older model. It's a brand new 1070 so I hope none of the ports would be bad, but I'm a bit limited on how I swap cables around because some monitors will only take DVI or (shudders) VGA, some take those plus HDMI and one is only DVI.

Then I don’t know I’m sorry to say but that’s all I could think of. Sounds dumb but did you make sure all the cables are all still plugged in all the way?

Have you made sure the driver isn't corrupted? or tried a known good setup like another set of monitors and cords?

Did this happen at all with your old graphics card? Do you still have it laying around, or any working spare to test with since your processor doesn't have integrated graphics? Have you tried re-seating the graphics card just to make sure it's making proper contact? Did you make any other upgrades at the same time, or just the graphics card? Does the issue occur with just one or two monitors, or only when you have all three connected?

If you can hear sound when the screens are blank, it means that it's getting past POST and it could be a driver issue. Drivers aren't loaded until Windows starts up, so it shouldn't be them if you aren't getting past POST. I also don't think this would be related to any setting in the BIOS, but it probably wouldn't hurt to poke around a bit, just make sure not to change any settings that you aren't knowledgeable about.

No and not for the first 11 months of having this GPU so I really dont think it's a problem with the hardware there. I dont have the old one anymore. Yes, it's making proper contact. I recently swapped cases and installed a new-to-me mobo, processor, CPU liquid cooler, RAM. The issue occurs periodically with some or all of the monitors when I have all three connected. I havent tried only having one or two plugged in. I dont hear sound when the screens are blank.

New-to-you motherboard, meaning someone owned it before you? I'd try clearing the CMOS and restoring BIOS values to their defaults, or update the BIOS if there's one available on the manufacturer's website, because if it's not POSTing then the motherboard is likely to be the reason why. Are you overclocking the CPU or RAM at all? It may just be an unstable overclock that sometimes prevents you from cold-booting.

It could also be a power supply issue if you don't have a particularly good model, wattage aside, although somehow I doubt this. Still maybe worth testing if you happen to have a spare lying around.

It shouldn't, since that processor doesn't have integrated graphics.

I have the same problem sometimes with a 1080ti and a single monitor connected by display port. These type of issues come up all the time with different drivers. The computer itself doesn't even like to go into sleep most of the time either. It gets into sleep and immediately comes back on. Consider my boot times, I just shut down now. No point in trying to figure out what the heck is going on.
