I just found out that the grand strategy game is free for a limited time on steam. It's only for the base game, the dlc for it still costs money, but is on sale. It also has online multiplayer capabilities to make it somewhat relevant.

Just like the rest of Paradox's games in the same style, CK2 is really hard to get into at first, but if you give it some time it's extremely enjoyable and you can get lost in it for hours.
