Default AMD new Ryzen 2nd gen

I'm looking at this new Ryzen 7 2700X that just came out for $330 including good cooler.

Previously looking to upgrade with the Intel 8700K but in addition to Battlefield I do a lot of video editing and crunching. Since I game at 1440 where you are GPU bottle-necked anyway the Intel chip apparently has no advantage anymore.

    Thoughts?

What games, if any, do you play besides battlefield? And what software do you use or may end up using for your video editing and crunching?

Knowing what software you use helps in picking out hardware.

If your going to do recording or anything like that I would still go with Intel.

It depends on the specific workload, but AMD is often characterized as great at multithreaded tasks. Video work usually loves more threads.

I asked specifically for what software OP uses so that it is easier to look for specific benchmarks that are the same software or are similiar.

A little more research (because people are benchmarking these new chips as I type this)...

It appears the new Ryzen will stomp Intel on 7-zip and Handbrake but ties on Adobe Premeire while falling behind on AE. Of course Ryzen (and the motherboards) are quite a lot cheaper than the Intel counterparts and Adobe software can make heavy use of graphics cards in rendering.

Since I'm still producing video at 1080 for Roku and Amazon (and even 720p for cable TV ads) it's not that important and my 4790K still handles the job nicely but I'm looking to the future and I do a lot of handbrake conversions where those 8 cores are mouthwateringly fast.

I think when it comes to gaming it's a wash.

I prefer the AMD chips over the Intel, mainly due to price point.

Lots of hype for the tweaked new ryzens. At least they are not much more than first gen.

Yup, Ryzen 2 is more of a hype and still use same architecture like Ryzen.
Ryzen 3 is what going to be a game changer. I wouldn't jump on Ryzen 2 hype train.

I'm an AMD guy myself, but from what I'm reading, it still games pretty well. It still looses to the 8700k by a few percentage points, but it's still in the thick of the fight. Now multitasking, that's going to be it's strong suite. That said, I have a ryzen 1600 that I'm happy with (1st Gen), and it's done will, I'll hold out until the 3000 or 4000 series I think though. But depending what you have now, it could still be a good upgrade.

You might look at their 6 core chips as well as those are still 12 threads.

Also, look at the 1st Gen chips as there are sales going now. Microcenter here for example was offering a 1600 and b350 board for 200. Which the CPU itself used to be 200.

Performance benchmarks relating to the kind of thing OP seemed interested in:

As other users stated, knowing if your video editing or other software support GPU processing is important as GPUs can be much faster at video editing work or any crunching that can be done highly parrallel or with many 'threads'. This also would let you look at benchmarks for the GPU and your desired software and put more money into the GPU than CPU

As far as these processors being hype: AMD is representing second generation Zen as what it is: Zen+ or an incremental update over first generation Zen. Zen2 is scheduled for 2019, assuming the manufacturing process for it doesn't have any delays. Delays are quite possible as the smaller the manufacturing process the higher the complexity and the more likely there will issues the chip fabrication company will have to smooth out before mass production.
