They were originally supposed to be almost heavy, deliberate, two handed weapons that required a lot of power to control, interestingly enough. Less of the flippy, fast action. But art? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Oh lord - delete this.
Disney doesn't understand the Character of Luke Skywalker either, or almost anything star wars. They understand money and milking the star wars cow F***ing dry though.
I mention ep 2 where Dooku pulls away from the "clinch" slightly, then scalds Obiwan on the arm and inner thigh.
Ever since return, we saw that a lightsaber CAN be used more like a sword than a laser. Remember that on Jabba's Sciff in return, Luke used his lightsaber on multiple guys, but they didn't even get "scorched", and had no marks on them. I think the saber's are meant to contain the "blade" photons in a sound barrier, that emits the humming. This barrier is soft, but solid, and needs to have some sort of decent swing behind it "cut". Therefor a saber is a mix of a sword/baseball bat/lazer sword, depending primarily on the STORY that needs to be told.
Remember that Kylo in ep 7 was using his anger, and I thought the way he fought, while movie-esque, reflected this well. Remeber that these ARE movies, they aren't meant to be super realistic.
With the OT, light sabers were actual swords. And they showed this by using real sword tactics. I.E. You take the pointy end and you try to stab / cut the other guy. The only other move in real sword fighting is making sure the other guy doesn't take HIS pointy end and stab / cut YOU.
But in the prequels, it turned into flippy spinny bullshit. Moves that had no real purpose other than to look cool. Contrast this with the OT where if the other guy didn't defend every single attack, he'd be dead on every single attack. Not so with the prequels. If Dooku didn't stick out his light saber against Yoda, Yoda would just be hitting air 95% of the time.
But going into the New Trilogy, there's an over looked aspect, even over looked by Disney / Star Wars. And that aspect is that Finn + Rey + Kylo are all AMATEURS. They mention this in SW7 a few times. Like after Finn stands his ground against Kylo, and Rey beats him in turn, Snoke literally says, "Bring him back to complete his training." I.E. HE'S A BEGINNER!
Going into SW8 showed a complete lack of ANYONE apparently watching SW7, and the whole thing starts to fall apart. For example, when Kylo rebelled against Luke, there's 5 or 6 OTHER recruits with him. Where did they go? Why aren't they shown at all from that moment out?
They should have shown Kylo returning to the other "rebels", and finishing his training. There should have been more bad guys! More evil jedi for Rey, with her new training-music-montage powers to take on for SW8.
But there wasn't. Proving that not even the people who made Star Wars watched it.
Xd hahahah
The Last Jedi is trash at the end of the day.
Still, I kinda liked the prequels, and even 7 was ok, just "meh", but I have only seen episode 8 once. For a die hard starwars fan like me to say that, shows how boring it was.

OK. Dannes, time to calm down. Do you understand that pre-new hope Jedi and Sith are superhumans with pre-cog abilities that spend thousands of hours perfecting there lightsaber dueling skills. AND, do you also understand that lightsaber blades have no weight which is why we see more flashy refined dueling styles such as Count Dooku. BECAUSE IF YOU DON'T YOU CL EARLY HAVE NOT PAID ATTENTION TO ANY STAR WARS LORE OVER THE PAST 20 YEARS.
goddamn nerds
I don't really mind the fast-paced lightsaber dueling as long as it does have series of random swinging, which occurs a bit in the PT movies. Out of all the lightsaber dueling choreography, I think my favorites are from the SWTOR trailers. Obi-Wan vs. Maul is pretty good too.
