Congratulations to our Sea of Thieves division on their first birthday! Along with our birthday, game developer Rare shared some amazing updates on what's to come in 2019. Pirates who have longed to cast their lines into the deep blue sea will soon have the opportunity to do just that, courtesy of the "game-changing" Anniversary Update. Set to arrive in April, the big update will also add a new competitive mode called the Arena, new narrative adventures, expanded ship damage, and more.
The Arena is a new competitive mode that will get sailors straight to the high-seas action, and then to the post-battle grog in the Glorious Sea Dog Tavern, home of a new trading company headed up by heroes of the Sea of Thieves comic series. Details haven't been disclosed, although the trailer gives a glimpse of what is to come. Rare said the mode "will continue to grow in parallel to the Sea of Thieves adventure experience."
For those who prefer more story-focused swashbuckling, a new series of narrative adventures called Shores of Gold will feature new and familiar characters and places. "Fans of the expanded game universe will recognize some of the iconic characters and locations in Shores of Gold, yet this is only the beginning of a series of Tall Tales that will allow players to immerse themselves in the legends of Sea of Thieves," Rare said.
An expanded ship damage system means that masts, capstans, and wheels can be damaged in battle, making effective sailing a very tricky prospect, while the addition of the harpoon will enable unexpected maneuvers. Striking the same place on an enemy ship with cannon balls will now make the holes bigger and increase water flow. And when the battle is won and the day is done, players will be able to fish, hunt, and cook what they catch. New enemies, traps, and other dangers are also on the horizon.
The Sea of Thieves Anniversary Update is scheduled to set sail on April 30. Full details are up at seaofthieves.com.
This is a great time to pick up or return to the game. Our division will host a number of streamed events following the April content release, so stay tuned for more swashbucklin' fun!
