    Default Antivirus software recomendations

    Hello all!
Ok, so I finally have had enough with McAfee slowing my system down, putting up stupid adds and splash pages while I'm trying to game.
I uninstalled it and used the removal tool provided by McAfee. I was wondering if using only Windows Defender is an adequate substitute.
    Thoughts?

Any antivirus is better than no antivirus. And as long as you keep your virus definitions up to date, windows defender is a perfectly viable (and free) option. It also depends on you to avoid going to nefarious websites and clicking on random things.

What version of McAfee were you using? I have used it for decades and have had no issues myself and don't get ads.

You don't need one. Just run windows defender. If you want a very non intrusive one get this: https://www.eset.com/us/home/online-scanner/

I use the free online one. It like scans once a month to remind me I'm clear of issues. No hit to performance and no over intrusive issues like with Norton or McAfee

As others have mentioned, the antivirus within Win10 functions great and I've used it for years without issues. A small thing you can do - if you are hardwired into your network, make sure you are plugged into a router and not directly into a cable modem. Most modern routers have fairly good protection as well.

i would recommend running more then one antivirus but im online a lot and am constantly having to download and look at files i use avast antivirus and malware bytes anti malware along with commando fire wall and virustotal to check files unlike some of the people here i wouldn't recommend only using windows defender because its not a constantly updated av i deal with online security regularly for work and personal including dealing with the risk of viruses and ransom wares they're youtubers that show this and how certain av deals with viruses and ransom wares one of them being a youtuber know as (the pc security channel) id check him out for an insight of free vs paid and otherstuff not saying that you cant only use one i think that antivirus software is not a onesize fits all thing so do your research and find what works for you

I am going to recommend Windows Defender as well, is it as good as any other antivirus in the market, it is integrated with Windows already and it doesn't take many system resources. I combine it with MalwareBytes (the free version is good enough).

I use Norton 360. I have for years. It used to be VERY heavy, but has lightened up quite a bit. It never seemed to slow down my old i5-4670K and it saved me from lots of bad stuff that some pR0n sites tried to redirect me to.

+1 for BitDefender. Low resource usage and constantly updated. Intuitive interface and user friendly imo. Also one of the most top rated antivirus for almost a decade.
I will never use Norton. It would cause BOSD issues for me and I refuse to ever touch Norton or McAfee again.

    +1 for defender.

I mean, I work in computer security, and quite frankly, I -never- thought I would be recommending defender, but, over the years Microsoft has really poured a ton of effort into it. It's a very good AV at this point.

Totally agree with this. Windows Defender has gotten considerably better in recent years and as long as your browsing behaviour is sensible and you take other precautions like don't run Windows on an administrator account etc generally you are fine.

The thing that is the most important aspect of computer security that no one has brought up.....

What are your computing habits and how careful are you with what may be considered risky computing?

Being cautious about email attachments and downloading unknown apps is going to go a lot farther toward security than how good your AV software is.

Who else uses the computer? Don't allow other admin level access to your system. Maybe don't run day to day as admin yourself.

Have a solid back up plan. I use paid Dropbox to store all my critical files not only for convenience across multiple systems but also for backup security. That way if you get infected it's just a minor inconvenience instead of a disaster. There's also MS OneDrive. I don't recommend Google for this anymore.

You can set up protected mode for your browser so it runs in a virtual machine and is isolated from your system if you encounter a hostile website that tries to execute code on your system.

I think most people get infections from fishing emails. Being more alert and cautious will go a long way. AV won't protect you from zero day exploits if you allow unknown code to run.

Keep Windows and other important software up to date. Use TPM and Windows 11 which is more secure than 10.

I have mission critical data for my business that is also regulated by various government regulations so I have to be careful.

All that said I don't run any AV outside Windows built in security features and combined with good habits I've been fine but I'm still prepared for a security breach.

Now on my parents computers....I keep McAfee installed! LOL! But we don't see these intrusive pop ups.

I don’t use any antivirus software, and my PC’s completely fine. I just try to be attentive and careful online and don’t visit any risky pages. That’s it. I don’t want an antivirus because it’s too expensive, bulky, and creates additional work for the PC. I think it’s totally fine not to use one as long as you’re smart about what websites you visit.
And if you become an object of a hacker attack, no antivirus will help you. You will need more complicated intrusion detection programs. You can read more about protecting your computer at https://thecrazyprogrammer.com/2021/...hijacking.html. The mistake that most people make is installing an antivirus and thinking it can 100% protect their PC from any malware.

As most stated before, Windows Defender is enough for most people. However, if you have some sites you sometimes access that are, lets say, less than reputably (), or stick USB drives you use at work on various other machines, or whatever other case, then a little extra protection is safer.
I like watching "The PC Security Channel" on YouTube, he is independent and tests all products for "real world" use, subjecting each product with the same abuse, and you get to see how each fair on the fly.

    YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@pcsecuritychannel/videos
Web Page (with overall best ranked AVs): https://thepcsecuritychannel.com/best-antivirus

In summary, with the tests he's done, top 7 AVs are (in order):
    1. Kaspersky
    2. BitDefender
    3. Avast
    4. Sophos
    5. ESET
    6. Norton
    7. Windows Defender

Most of these have free versions which work just as well as the paid option, just has less options to mess around with. Engine is the same and therefore, performance is the same.
Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.
