Default PC locks up after new video card

    Hello All,

My kid has an existing system with the following components:
    - EVGA Z77 FTW motherboard
    - i7-3770k CPU
    - 32 GB RAM
    - 800w Corsair power supply

They got a new video card - Nvidia RTX 2060. They also got a new 1 TB SSD. Fresh install of Win 10.

Everything worked great, until launching a game. Screen turns black and the whole thing freezes up. Event Viewer says power kernel 41. That makes me think power supply. He's got a Corsair 800w system. OK... maybe the new card uses a lot of power. I get him a Corsair 1000w power supply. That's got to do it, right?

After install, same thing. freezes to black screen when launching the game. Power kernel 41 error.
    - reseat the gpu.
    - reseat the power cords.
    - one power cord directly to gpu with nothing else on it.
    - checked RAM for any errors and none.
    - estimated power needed with full system to be 700w.

What could it be at this point? Evidence points to not enough power, but a 1000w power supply really should do it. Any advice at this point? I want to take it to the local shop, but they aren't open again until Monday morning.

Definitely weird. is anything overheating? CPU, Motherboard stuff like that? The only things that come to mind that would borked would be either the motherboard or the cpu.
Though your 800w psu was from the get go as it has plenty of juice for those components but the fact that you got a new one and still acted up is weird.

Are all of his drivers full updated? BIOS, Chipset drivers, GPU drivers, SSD drivers etc.
Is the GPU overclocked? check msi afterburner and reset it all if they have.
Have you tried the GPU on your own setup? It might help to see if it's the GPU that could be faulty

Because you said it was your kids machine, I'm assuming you have another one (yours?). If so, you're in a unique position to troubleshoot what others normally can't. You tried replacing the PSU, which I would've also first suspected in your case. It's definatly not too little power though because my GPU has a higher TDP than the 2060 and I've been running it stable for years with a 750W PSU.
So, since it's not the PSU, have you tried the 2060 in your machine? Or at least try the original GPU in your kids machine again, so we sure everything is working as it was before.

    Hi All,

I spent the weekend troubleshooting and working with NVIDIA. Nothing worked. No overclocking or overheating. Everything updated driver wise. Even rolled back the drivers to not the latest as some GPU had issues. Nothing worked.

I did put in an older NVIDIA and it worked fine. It's gotta be the new video card. I requested a replacement today and boxed up the old one. I think it's a bad card. I'll find out soon enough, though.

Probably the best thing to do, Hopefully it goes well when you do get a replacement! :)

What was the old card you used?

It could be the PSU is dying and the power draw of the 2060 is pushing it over the edge. The 2060 is said to require 160 W at peak, but vendors get tricky with their configs and it could be pulling more.

Have you tried running a benchmark with the 2060 installed?

If it isn't too late, could you try the 2060 in another machine?

From the steps you mentioned it doesn't sound like power supply. 800W is more than enough for a 2060.

I was running a Ryzen 7 3700x and Nvidia 1080ti with a 750W PSU with no problems. I can't see your kid's system drawing more than mine.
