One thing to keep in mind if you do decide on a 4090 would be keeping your stuff safe with a highend PSU (ATX 3.0)
There are plenty videos online on this topic.

At the price they where announced at tho, I'm tempted to pull the trigger myself even though'

i would higly reccommend to consider the motherboard bandwith needed for the 4090.. If you are rocking a 1080, your motherboard will most likely not be keep up..

Considering their pricing for their new line up of RTX cards(which is outrageous) i'd wait for AMD to pull out their cards.
Personally i might just go AMD

I'm running a MEG X570 ACE motherboard and it has up to 64GB/s of bandwidth so i'm guessing it will be fine haha

4090 cards will require ATX 3.0 power supply. Keep that in mind.

I have that exact PSU. It's only ATX 2.4. It's probably fine for the 4080s, but don't risk it on the 4090.

If you're set on a 4090 you'll have to wait until ATX 3.0 PSUs release later this year. They aren't available yet.

I personally am still satisfied with my DIY water-cooled 1080ti on my main rig. It runs all my games at 4k 55-60 fps no problem.

The only thing I thought I was missing was ray tracing, but still very few of my games support that. I would wait for AMD to launch and see how prices will settle. If you're not hurting for RT, why not stick with AMD new generation. They're more competitive price wise and more energy efficient. I fear in the coming years energy consumption will matter more.

Personally, I'd recommend waiting for real-world benchmarks comparing the two brands before making a purchase on either. I've always leaned more toward Nvidia, on a personal level, however with EVGA getting out of the GPU business, I feel more in the middle until I see real-world benchmarks. It also gives them more time to iron out any issues with the cards/drivers too.

Nvidia has confirmed that a power supply with a minimum of 850w is good enough for the 4090. You also don't have to buy one with the new spec and the provided adapter will work.

    https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce...pecifications/

I'll be waiting until next year to purchase the 4090. Let all the bugs get worked out first.

Ripoff tbh. Depends what you play and if you're dedicated to Nvidia. Even then I'd wait for AMDs response so hopefully prices come down. That didn't work out too well last generation tho since everything went crazy. I only play COD and Battlefield so while I missed my 3080ti for nvenc I ended up selling it and keeping my 6800xt as Warzone has an annoying memory leak issue that causes your frames to drop to about half and stutter like crazy after a few hours of gameplay and can kick in at random times causing you to have to completely restart the game. Made obvious by the 25gb of ram being used after a few hours. On AMD its 16gb and stays at 16gb no matter how long I play and performance never changes. Do have stupid issues in older games ever since they released the dx9/dx11 fix drivers tho but I don't stray far from COD or BF. AMD is supposed to have something more competitive with nvenc this generation tho. AMDs recording encoder is actually great it just doesn't work with streaming software. So streaming sucks but recording is on par between the 2.

Sorry for the long rant but throwing up some random info 😅

Yea, I second what most said here. Just wait.
nVidia is basically trying to rip off people with these prices, and they know it, or they wouldn't be calling a 4070 a "4080 12GB" to try and justify the price hike, compared to the previous generation launch prices. I mean, it would sound sort of ok to you if you thought you bought a "4080" now for $900 compared to a 3080's $700 MSRP when it was launched. But the true 4080 is going launch with a MSRP of $1200, compared to the 3080 $700. The "4080 12GB" is a big cut down version of the 4080, not just VRAM! I mean look below, it's basically what the 4070 should be:

Unfortunately, I've heard AMD are going to go along with this and their prices might not be much better, which I hope is really not what ends up happening. This would be a fine time for AMD to win over nVidia customer by offering a good GPU at a good price. But ya' know, greed has been rampant last few years and the only way they drop price is if most refuse to buy GPUs at these stupid prices.

Depends. AMD has always priced the flagship close (but much fairer) to Nvidia flagship but their second card is always very well priced at 95% of the performance. 6800xt would have been amazing bang for buck of we ever really had it at msrp lol.

Yup, 4090 is a beast. Even though it comes with a huge price tag, you actually have the performance to (sort of) justify the price.
The more mainstream, cheaper cards are a rip off, though. Which are actually the cards most people want/can buy. In terms the rasterization performance (actual raw performance before the DLSS bullshitery), the 4070, err... "4080 12GB" I mean, is barely better than the 3080. And with a massive MSRP hike to boot compared to the 3080, never mind the 3070 with which it actually should be compared to. Here's a video that sums up quite nicely:
