J2C just trashed talked the X3D and now I'm lost

I was planning on a new build with AMD and figured the X3D was a no brainer. I play a lot of Battlefield.

Jay just trashed talked the x3D on his youtube and said he wished he'd gone for the non X3D chip instead citing all kinds of issues he's had.

I am running two rigs now. One has the AMD 3900X CPU (with a NVidia 3090FE) and the other the 5600X (with an AMD RX6800XT) and they've been fantastic but I want to upgrade the old 3900 to a 7900 and figured the X3D was a no brainer (Was going to pair it with a RX7900XT or XTS and new motherboard/ram)

thoughts?

I know a lot of guys are running these chips. I do a lot of other stuff but nothing really speed critical. This is for gaming.

Tbh Jay has sold out pretty hard. I wouldn't even consider him an enthusiast anymore. He's not enthusiastic enough to keep up with current tech and do proper research. His x3d build either had a bad board, bad memory or he just didn't bother to turn on memory context restore and power down mode in the bios (this is most likely what happened and is common on asus boards. Go with asrock or gigabyte for your board. They have far less issues than msi or asus on am5. You should be fine with those and a decent kit of 6000 memory.

My main gaming rig (see here for specs) is running a 7950x (non 3d) and games perfectly fine, I ended up going with the non 3d cpu as based on alot of research it seemed to pull ahead of the 3d in productivity tasks most of the time.

The ONLY issue I ran into was when I was using a different set of ram (sadly forget the model number but they where a gskill kit, as soon as I enabled EXPO I was constantly getting bsod's; disable EXPO and the issue went away) so I ended up returning it for a kit from Corsair that supported EXPO and I haven't had an issue since then.... well... aside from this thing being a space heater when I game heh'

Thanks for the input. I recently finished a ground up build around an MSI X670E and 7900X3D (was on sale and the same price as the 7800X3D). Got a gen 5 NVMe and 32GB ddr5.

I'm keeping the NVidia 3900 for now since everything except the 4900 (which are ridiculously priced now) is just a marginal upgrade. I usually skip every other gen CPU and graphics card anyway so I'm just out of sync.

System runs great, super fast, stable (so far), quiet.

Honestly, I used to listen to J2C's opinions, but stopped over a year ago after some of his pretty crap takes. The CPU you chose is considered by Gamers Nexus and Hardware Unboxed, amongst other trusted tech reviewers, as the best/balanced bang for your buck gaming CPU you can get now.

Honestly should have just gotten the 7800x3d. The 7900x3d is on sale for a reason. You're essentially limiting yourself to 6 x3d cores. If you look up reviews from places like gamer nexus they'll explain why. Personally I'd 100% return it for the 7800x3d if you are still within the window.

For those that don't know, and if I'm not mistaken, in games they essentially "park" half their cores to be able to use all of their L3 cache. In the 7900X3D's case, it's actually worse in some games compared to the 7800X3D because the 7800X3D can run all it's 8 core and take advantage of all the L3 cache, while the 7900X3D can only run 6 of it's 12 cores.
However, because the 7900X3D's boost clock is quite a bit higher than the 7800X3D's, the actual gaming performance differences in games between these 2 CPUs is very small. With this in mind, plus the fact that Woody got the 7900X3D for the same price as the 7800X3D, and the fact that the 7900X3D is superior to the 7800X3D, outside of games, in almost every way, I would actually also be tempted to go for the 7900X3D.

You'd be wrong to think that unless your primary use case is non gaming workloads. 6 cores are essentially obsolete for gaming. Games like bf2042 or warzone need more than 6 cores for optimal performance already and it's only going to get worse the more games that come out. That's also assuming perfect core allocation in windows which AMD relies on Xbox app to do. 7800x3d is just the cleaner option and really the only x3d chip gamers should be looking at this gen.

Mild tangent. Do we still trust GamersNexus for hardware? I know LTT had their reputation toilet bowled. People have been hot/cold with J2C/JTC as long as I've followed.
