'Dem "giant robots" are from the Battletech universe, which include the games Mechwarrior 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, MechCommander 1 and 2, Mechwarrior Online, Battletech (the game from Paradox Interactive), board games since the 1980's (fist game set published in 1984), 150 somewhat novels and other stuff I forget.

All weapons in the Battletech universe have pros and cons. Cost, Range, Heat Generation, Rate of Fire, Size and Weight. In the case of the AC-20, the weapon does extreme damage at short range, but it's a very heavy, big and expensive weapon. Also has very low range and very low rate of fire. Many consider the AC-10 the better all round weapon, because although it doesn't have the tremendous damage at short range, it has none of the other disadvantages of the AC-20. But then again, nothing put's a bigger smile on your face when you get in optimal range of your dual AC-20 King Crab, and delete the other mech from existence.
