Icon7 Rather great "game" that took up my time for a couple of days...

Well first of all, most probably know I haven't been on as much as I'd like to. One of my classmates introduced me to a game called Katawa Shoujo, and I've been a rather, nay, pretty big fan of it. So I thought I'd share it with whoever frequents this section of the forums.

(Generally accurate transcript of convo between me and him, H being him and M being me)
H: ...should try this game out, called Katawa Shoujo.
    M: ..What's it about?
    H: Well it's a visual novel about...
    M: Visual novel? O.o
H: Yea it's my first time playing this game too. I saw it on (forgot what it was, some social network but not a mainstream one) and thought "Why not try it out...it looks interesting."
    M: Okay...so what's it about?
H: It's kind of a dating sim with disabled people instead of normal people.
    M: O_o...
H: Well I read that the story is pretty good, so I gave it a shot. I highly recommend it to you.
M: Well okay...How did you get it?
    H: It's free.
M: By free you mean pirated right? =P
H: No, no, it was released for free.
    M: Hmm...intriguing.
    ------------------------------------End of transcript---------------------------------

My first impressions of the game were that I was pressing *Space* to skip through all the chat and found the story...kind of boring, to be honest. I did have an idea of which girl I would like to meet, but I hadn't met that character yet.

Fast forward 30 mins later after a lot of spacebar pressing and I realized I started to care about the characters. Specifically, the character that I had been spending a lot of time talking to. When reached the end, it was pretty emotional inside me, since the game had been really realistic to me. (Fortunately I got the happy ending :D)

After I finished the game, I read through other comments about the game, and saw that many other people had thought the game was really well written (for some character paths), and others liked how it potrayed the disabilities of the characters in a mature manner without being juvenile.

A far cry from how I originally thought the game was. For lack of a better qote, I had the impression that the game was
    Spoiler
    "nailing crippled chicks"
but was pleasently surprised by it. It did change my perspective of the disabled considerably, which is no mean feat for a seemingly simple visual novel.

Here's the lowdown on the game.
-As it is a dating sim, it DOES have it's share of Mature/18+ scenes, but there is an option to skip all of such scenes in the Options Menu.
-File size is pretty big at 420MB, so I do not suggest downloading from one mirror. >.<
-The team behind this game have confirmed that they will not be making a sequel to the game, and have generally disbanded after 5 years of producing this game. =/

So yes, if you are interested after reading what I typed, you could google Katawa Shoujo and try playng the game for yourself. I, for one, loved the depth of the characters (and the way they defied some sterotypes). Although it's my first time playing such a type of 'game', or rather visual novel, I can recommend this to those that are reading this post.

*Should be read if/after you've played the game*

I'm reading/"playing" through it... and I have to say, I'm impressed. Very interesting characterization and approach to various disabilities and coping techniques. Really neat.

Thanks, NegSpace. I introduced this game/VN to two irl friends and they were pretty interested in it. One ended up with
    Spoiler
    Emi
and the other ended up with
    Spoiler
    Hanako
    .

To be fair, the VN did take some liberties in some parts (imho). And with the characters all attractive-looking in an anime-ish way, instead of having horrific disabilties that may be closer to real life, there could be grounds for people criticizing the game for not being realistic enough.

But it might be asking too much for that from a VN, and I daresay it has had an extraordinary impact in people's lives after playing it. Maybe not to the extreme levels for others in the case of mine, but I liked how the focus was on the characters rather than the
    Spoiler
    mature
    segments.

5 years of love, sweat and passion were put into this game. Being released for free, the creating team had no renumeration or earnings to show for all their dedication and time. Kudos to them >.<

I like how all of the characters have touching, but not overly melodramatic storylines. And how the main character (you) makes a difference in their lives for the better. I would be pretty surprised if someone played the VN and came out feeling no changes towards the disabled.

    I've played through one character's
    Spoiler
    Emi's
path four times so far. It never fails to make me a bit emotional, and I've read that many others feel the same way.

In short, you may get "feels" for the characters in this VN. Just a warning :P

I would agree that the reason it is compelling is the characterization. You see the characters in terms of
    Spoiler
personality traits and not their disabilities (well, maybe not Hanako so much... at least not yet).

I only just finished act 1, so it's been strictly PG. I was more curious about how they would approach the whole disability topic, and I am pleasantly surprised. Though it's not masterfully written, the feelings it manages to convey for the protagonist seem genuine and natural.

Mature content aside, I think it's a nifty piece of work.
