Default Bios not recognizing boot drive

Some how an attempt to stop windows defender from using 100% of the hard drive has turned into an issue with my bios no longer recognizing the boot drive.

I disabled defender, no joy task manager still reported ridiculous disk usage from defender. Explorer spontaneously stops working. I restart it from task manager. Since the problem seemed to involved the hard drive I ran scannow. It reported problems and saved the fix for a restart. I restart my computer, it hangs on patch installation until the screen goes dark. Computer proceeds to attempt a start after I click on the keyboard. No joy, I get the advanced start options. Well fuck this I say and go straight to a restore point. Again no joy, restore point deleted during failed attempt. I attempt normal restart, no joy, at no point after this was I able to start windows. I try the refresh with files. Again no joy. I try knocking it back to factory settings, no joy. I dig out my windows boot USB and attempt a clean install. The normal boot drive is now nowhere to be found. I remove the windows bootable on a suspicion. Sure enough I can't even make it past the bios anymore, no boot device found. I crack open my case, switch out the cables and try a different mobo sata port. Nothing works.

I'm out of ideas for now, anyone else got something? I don't care about the data, much of it is in a cloud anyways. If I'm fucked at least tell me where I went wrong.

Are you 100% sure that the hard drive is still working and spinning up? It may have just randomly failed altogether. Is it an SSD or a traditional hard drive?

Yep that was going to be my next question. And be sure to use a different SATA cable if possible. I can't count how many SATA cables I've had fail on me.

I did try different cables already and it's an ssd. I was going to go the other way, I have a couple traditional ones from my old computer I was going to hook up.

Sorry if you have tried this already and I missed reading it, but sounds like a similar issue I had:
Have you tried resetting bios? Pulling power, battery and jumper(if necessary on your mobo)? Had my bios become corrupted doing something similar and it wouldn't recognize certain devices until I reset it.

On a similiar note I've also had BIOs issues like this when the bios battery was starting to fail, but had not failed as of yet. However his suggestion is far more likely.

Thank you I'll try that today before taking the computer in to a shop.

The hard drive is dead. The shop confirmed it this morning. Thank you guys for your help. If you are running Windows 8 it may pay to check that defender isn't caught in a scanning loop, and running 100% disk usage.

    Now to read that warranty...

Pretty sure I've got windows defender disabled. I'll check though, thanks.
