I just thought, why don't we put together an AoD bitcoin mining operation? With the amount of members we have, we could all make some decent coinage.

Because no one actually uses bitcoin
You'd be surprised how many dealers are accepting them these days.
But seriously, if not Bitcoin mining, SETI@home or any of those cloud sourced projects, you'd be surprised what our entire computing power could accomplish.
Two years ago this would have been a viable idea; today not so much. The flops required to be a successful miner right now are so high you're looking at specialized hardware in the $20k range to be able to even begin to produce a decent ROI.
Either way, putting all of AoD's computing power into one cloud in order to mine Bitcoins, or any other forms of data, could be an interesting social experiment, as well as lucrative in some forms. We already have more members a lot of colleges and universities that have their own cloud computing groups.
Mining bitcoins costs more in equipment and power consumption than you get out of it. You end up with no or negative ROI. Plus bitcoin is just a libertarian fad and the only touted advantage I've heard of is to bypass paypal fees.
I do fine mining with my CPU, and gaming at the same time. Even $200 a month is $200 of month less we have to spend on vent or servers.
i would be intrested in this stuff i wanted to get in to it but i do not know much about it, only thing i know is recently they are selling built pc's just for mining that are very efficient power per profit i think i was some article on tom's hardware
I've seen the mining machines, and those $1500 to $20,000 machines are for solo miners who want to see a return plus profit, crowd sourced projects don't require it, especially with how many of us have top line gaming computers. SETI@Home is another really good idea though, because our combined computing power helps expand our knowledge of the skies by analyzing data collected from SETI and sending it back to the station. Outside of that, Berkley has an entire department dedicated to this sort of research, anyone interested can look into it here: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/ It has everything from astronomy to cryptography, there's all sorts of stuff that is low cost on your system.
is there any other websites that you can post so other people can check them out pls and thank you
Lucrative is kind of a risky declaration. It requires a lot of capital to invest in a bitcoin mining rig, and you need an ASIC processor which is basically useless for any other task. That and quite a few 690ti's and it takes a long time. I wish I got into it in high school. Boy, the money I could've made!
Again, those machines are only for solo mining and if you want a chance of seeing a decent return, and ASIC isn't all that needed. I'm using guiminer right now, and it works off either ATI or NVIDIA cards, your computers natural CPU, or you can plug in external hardware. And again, I'll point out it's more over an interesting social experiment to see what kind of power AOD can put together more than anything.
If someone would compile a way to do this, I say i'm in! I have 2 gaming pc's and ill happily leave them on overnight (Im in the UK so this is daytime for most of you) and contribute :D. Anything to help the survival of AOD :D.
